The meaning of lantern to kids these days
When is Mid-Autumn Festival? I heard it is around the corner so we brought the kids lantern shopping today. They don’t sell traditional paper lantern anymore do they?
The first lantern that Ayden chose is the type that has sound and wheels and can move on land but I told the Daddy to get them something more ‘traditional’ as in a lantern that will only light up without those annoying sound and movement.
The Daddy gave Ayden a Minion ‘traditional’ lantern. Ayden kept shaking it for sound and movement but nothing happened.
He did not like it and complained to the Daddy that the lantern is not working properly.
He left it on the floor and pestered big bro Ethan to get something more ‘interesting’.
In the end he got this. Boys and wheels can never go wrong. Ayden doesn’t treat this as a lantern. To him this is another vehicle toy.
Wait till I give him the old school paper lantern. I think he’ll faint if I tell him all we do is light it up, hold it and walk around aimlessly. I use to enjoy doing that when I was younger but what I enjoyed more is the burning part. I actually preferred to burn the candles and play with the wax rather than walking around holding the lantern until my arms got sore. What about you?
It is next Sunday!!
We still have some leftover paper lanterns so would be using and playing with them.
Hope the boys enjoy their new lanterns.
Hi Merryn, sorry for my late visit..
oh.. i love those cute Minion lanterns…oh and I see a Baymax one too haha.. It’s no doubt that these kids will appreciate these cartoon inspired lanterns than those traditional…
When I was very young like Ayden age now, I used to love my cloth and paper lanterns. I never burn them. Then I love playing with the wax of the candles, to sculpture items like playdoh. May Ethan and Ayden enjoy the lantern mooncake festivals!
Me? 90% of the time would be allocated to candles, only 10% for lanterns. Maybe it was 99% to 1%… You remember those animal shaped lanterns made with colored transparent sheets? Yeah… not interested with those too. Candles more fun lah…
They don’t? I saw a whole lot at the mall near my house that day – they are already hanging them all over. I prefer the traditional ones with Chinese artwork…not the ones with Frozen & other Disney cartoons.
Too bad, the festival is so near already or I could go and look around and get some for the boys.
The lanterns have turned into toys..i still prefer the original type of lanterns which bring out the true meaning of mooncake festival. My brothers used to make lanterns themselves when we were kids,
Burning candle wax and play ‘masak masak’ definitely the “game” that most anticipated when Mid Autumn Festival!
I never get to hold a lantern and walk around the neighborhood but I do enjoy hanging up the lanterns and wait for the candle to fall off and burning off the lantern. LOL
I just love the smell of the burning lantern.. hahahah
