Satar – Terengganu’s Local Delicacy
During our stay in Awana Kijal Golf, Beach and Spa Resort, the staffs there kept on raving about a certain fish snack called satar. They kept asking us if we’ve tried it. Honestly speaking, I’ve never heard of such a snack. When I knew I am going to Terengganu, the first thing that came to mind is keropok lekor and nasi dagang but definitely not satar as I am not even aware of its existence. Pardon my ignorance :(
On the second day of our stay in the resort, we went for the Kampung Tour. During the tour, the bus driver stopped us by the road side so we can have a look at what satar actually is.
There are many stalls selling satar in Kuala Terengganu. They are mainly situated by the roadside.
Satar is a snack made of fish. It is a mixture of mashed fish, grated coconut, pepper, ginger, chillies, bay leaves and tumeric leaf.
Satar is wrapped in banana leaf.
The mashed fish mixture is wrapped in a coned shaped banana leaf and secured with bamboo stick.
Each of them is skewered and grilled over hot coals until golden brown. Smoky fragrant smell of banana leaf filled the air making me excited already!
The mashed fish is now ready to be eaten. Fragrant and firm, this flavorful snack is simply delicious. Sweet and spicy, I am already addicted to it!
It was my first time eating satar and already, I’m loving it! I don’t remember seeing anything like this in KL and now that I know how delicious this is, I’m sure gonna miss it a lot when I’m back in KL :(
your post is making me hungry!

Erm… imagine fish paste mixed with grated coconut and spices with lingering fragrant banana leaf scent… don’t imagine otak-otak coz it is not otak-otak.

The mashed fish paste wrapped in banana leaf is really special to me.
Yes, it is special to me too :)
I never tried Satar as well, but I believe it is yummy from the pictures you shared here.

I read about this food on the TV programme the other day..It seems Terengganu has lot of nice food to eat too.
Terengganu has lots to offer on their local delicacy. Nasi dagang, lemang, keropok lekor.. yums! I wanna go back there again ^_^
Another version of otak otak. Had this once in Terengganu too, many years ago. Very nice.
It doesn’t look very appetizing to me, but since you said you were addicted to it, I bet it taste good lo!
