Quick and Easy Snack Ideas for School Children
It is the third week of school. I still havent been able to establish a routine of waking up early in the morning to prepare food for Ethan. The reason being I usually stay up till 2am for work and if I wake up at 5am, I’ll remain awake the entire day to care for the two boys. On days that I really can’t get my eyes to open, Ethan will purchase food from the canteen but he mentioned that the food portion from canteen is not filling enough so the Daddy will usually give him bread or biscuits to eat together with the food from canteen.
I keep Ethan’s snack box simple. I try not to spend too much time and usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes to prepare his meal.
These are some examples of Ethan’s snack box:
Fried meehoon
Time : 15 minutes
Chap fan – Steamed rice with stir fried carrot n corn, egg n tomato omelette and fried tumeric fish.
Time : 30 minutes
This was one of the first few meals I prepared for him hence it took a longer time. I don’t spend that much time anymore after this.
Chap fan – Homemade dumplings, scrambled eggs, stir-fried mix veges and fishballs.
Time : 15 minutes
The night before, chop the veges and wrap the wanton. Refrigerate. Cook the rice before I go to bed and keep warm.
Next morning just fry the wanton, boil the fishballs, stir-fry the veges and egg. Done in 15 mins or less.
Chap fan – Sweet sauce chicken, stir-fried okra and fried egg.
Time: 15 minutes
The night before, marinate chicken with dark sauce, honey and pepper. Fry the next morning. Simple and delicious.
Chap fan – Sweet sauce chicken, fried fish fillet, stir fried broccoli with corn and carrot.
Time: 15 minutes
I learned the easier and faster way to cook fish. Instead of taking a whole lot of time frying the entire fish like I did previously, I now slice the fish into fillet and freeze in small portions in containers. The night before I take one container down into the fridge so it can thaw slowly. The next morning I just marinate with oyster sauce and sesame oil and fry. Very fast and Ethan loves it very much. As usual, cut veges into small parts the night before and keep refrigerated in an airtight container.
Fried rice
Preparation time : 15 minutes
I sometimes give him a tub of oat crunch to share with his friends as they love sharing food. Fried rice seems to be the most popular item and is prepared most frequently as it is the easiest and also Ethan love to eat fried rice.
So yeah… this is why you sometimes see me blur, blur. Until I am able to plan my time nicely, I’ll be a temporary mummy zombie.

oh these are not just quick and easy but healthy meals too.. i wish moms will offer time to prepare meals for their kids before they sent the kids in school instead of giving them money and let kids buy snacks on their own as most of them will end up buying unhealthy meals and junk foods
Sometimes, eventhough the moms want to prepare food for the kids, but these kids prefer to buy food from the canteen. When I was diligently preparing food for Ethan, he sees his friends buying food from the canteen and wondered what it is like to be buying his own food. We finally allowed him to purchase his own food and now that he knows, he is happy eating the food I prepared for him. Of course I’ll also let him buy his own food every once in a while as kids will be kids, they love to eat unhealthy every now and then :D
On the bright side, it is good that he prefers your food over canteen junk. I remember hating mom’s cooked food (yes, hate!) because canteen food is tastier and more delicious, what with all those fries and nuggets and hotdogs and whatnot. :/
Ethan said the food at the canteen are mostly a little on the spicy side but he is okay with that. It is just that the portion is a bit too small so it is not enough for him. I can foresee him buying two plates of noodles in the future but that will be RM4 as a plate of plain noodle with an egg is RM2. Not very economical also.
You take nap when Ayden soes. That what I do some day when I am tired or didnt sleep well the night before. I could steal some sleep in morning since ai be busy driving and cooking in the afternoon.
Again, I have to give it to you. You are a great mum. I dont prepare such rice or noodle dishes for my kids. Just sandwiches or I buy pastry and buns for them.
The problem is Ayden doesn’t nap anymore. Huhuhu.
Sedapnya the lunch box you prepared for Ethan.
If my girls requesting for lunch box, I think I ll pengsan. Not sure a good or a bad thing. Haha
Of course you’ll pengsan lah. You need to go to office. I dont :D
You said u are not a good cook..tipulah. How do u come up with all these in such a short time? I still can’t cook fried meehoon that well. I just lie down on the sofa for a cat nap and leave the girls on their own for that brief time. I cannot tahan..wake up at 5.40am leh.
I prepare the vege and all the night before, that is why I can cook very quickly. Very simple cooking only lah all these :D
You cook so fast! But you do spend more time before that to prepare the home made dumplings, to wash the vegetables and cut them, right?
Yes, I prepared the raw ingredients the night before :)
