Ayden’s musical journey
If you have been following my blog and FB, you’ll know that big brother Ethan is a drummer as well as a pianist. He started learning piano when he was 5 and half a year later he took up drums.
For piano, the piano teacher comes over to our house therefore Ayden sees her teaching the kor-kor all the time.
It also intrigued him into playing the piano. The piano teacher did introduce Ayden to the piano when he was 2 years 10 months old. She taught him to play ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’. Watch this video of him singing and playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star:
Ayden was 2 years 10 months then. What happened was, after mastering that song, he told me he is done learning. He thought that once he has learned one song, it is all over. He did not continue his piano lessons after that…
Until a week ago when I casually took out big brother Ethan’s piano book and asked Ayden if he wants to try playing it with me. Surprisingly he is excited to try. Fast forward to a week later, he is able to play this simple piece:
But he is still young and doesn’t have long attention span. He only plays for about 10 minutes and then goes running to the drums or outside to his playmat. It is okay with me. I will not force him to learn the piano or drums or anything. We already have the piano and drums at home. He can learn them anytime …

Yes just let Ayden have fun playing some piano whenever he likes to enjoy music. No need for formal lessons yet.
My girl took lessons to play, did not sit for any exam and she enjoys playing to this day. Exams kinda spoil things, takes out all the fun. Stress!!!
I was about to comment on the attention span when you mentioned it in last paragraph. Haha. Yup. Too young. But if he has interested, can learn him learn full time when he is 5 or 6. My girl also learnt piano when she was 5yo plus. Jay was 6.
Once Jamie can recognise notes I would like him to learn too. For now he would strung any noise out of the piano sometime. Lol.
It really is such a gift to give children skills in music at a young age. Music can bring so much pleasure and joy of life.
Ayden is so cute!
