Moist Orange Cake Recipe

We’ll be baking moist orange cake today. I browsed the web and found a recipe on allrecipes.co.uk that I believe will work so I tested it out.  I tweaked it to suit my preference and this is the result:
Moist Orange Cake recipe

Super moist and delicious orange cake.

This is my tweaked recipe:

110g butter
130g sugar (the original calls for 150g)
Grated orange zest from ONE orange (the original says 2 tablespoons)
2 egg yolks
2 egg whites
125g self-raising flour
125ml fresh orange juice
1 pinch salt (I omitted this as I used salted butter)
1/2 tsp baking soda (The original recipe did not use baking soda but I added this as my cake did not rise nicely on my previous attempt)

Rice Cooker Super Moist Orange Cake

This is how I measure the orange juice. LoL! I have so many unused milk bottles as I direct latch Ayden so his bottles are now my measuring cup :P

I actually blended an entire orange without the seed and peel so it’s a little thicker compared to just juice as there are pulp and fibre in there too.

Orange zest.

Rice Cooker Orange Cake

My readers often asked me if the texture of cakes baked using rice cooker is the same as those baked using an oven. My answer is YES. The only difference is the cakes baked using rice cooker has a pale top but they retain moisture better and have beautiful crust on the sides and bottom.

This orange cake recipe is a keeper. It’s quick, easy to make yet very moist and delicious. Another tried and tested recipe to add into my collection of successful rice cooker cakes.

Finally recorded a video of Ayden baking this cake:

The cake looks really delicious! Ayden must be the youngest baker in the world! :D

He loves baking now and can actually handle the electric mixer well. Am thinking to get an oven so we can bake cookies too.

  • //

He looks sooooo serious, no fooling around one – really means business. Yet to try baking, girl coming home today for the week-long Raya break. Maybe I can do that when she’s home.

    • //

You have an oven. Pls bake a cake or cookies. I would do anything to get a working oven at home :( Mine is sitting there dunno for what. Switched on and the entire house power will trip..

  • //

Cute little baker. Love the look of the cake.

    • //

Yes, it’s very fluffy and moist. I love it too :)

  • //

  • //

That was very brilliant of you Merryn. Never thought to modify any recipe. I will follow it faithfully. By the way, you do have a serious baker in the house. A cutie pie too ☺️☺️

Ayden really looks busy here and I guess he had lots of fun!I love anything orange except the fruit itself, maybe too sour for me. But I cannot resist Orange juice, yogurt, sherbet and of course, Orange cake. Can poslaju to me? Pack nice nice hor…

Thank you so much for sharing your successful rice cooker cakes recipe…I tried your moist chocolate rice cooker cake before and it worked superb. Will be trying baking other cakes with the recipe that you share :)

    • //

You are welcome Nancy. It’s great to know the moist chocolate rice cooker cake turned out great. Happy baking :)

  • //

Mine didnt work :( our rice cookers base turned black after 3 mins . hoho smells so bad so took it off , it taste bad , smells bad too . how sad

    • //

      Hi Janine,

Sorry to hear that. Does your rice cooker come with the CAKE function?

  • //

    Hi Submerryn
This is my 2nd attempt making the moist orange cake. The cake turned out to be very oily? Can I reduce the butter and by how much?

Another question – when I invert the cake from the rice cooker to let it cool, the cake breaks into 2. Why is this so?

    Appreciate your advice. Thanks.

    • //

      Hi Pearly,

I’m sorry but I dont have any idea why your cake turns out oily. Mine turns out fine every time.

Regarding the cake breaking into two, I always place the steaming basket inside the pot before turning it upside down so that the cake doesn’t fall from too high so my cake doesn’t break. Maybe you can try it that way?

Hope that helps. Do let me know if you have further questions :)

    • //

      Hi Pearly,

I baked this cake again today with my son. I’ve also included the video in this post. It turns out good again and did not break so I’m really sorry as I do not know why yours break.

    Hi,

Thanks for sharing this recipe! For mine, the base and sides of the cake turned out pretty burnt. Had to removed them… The inside tastes great though! Any idea why it didnt turn out as well?

    • //

      Hi Alicia,

I’m sorry the sides of your cake turned out burnt. What kind of rice cooker are you using? Is it auto? Mine auto switch off after 1 hour baking. Maybe you can switch it off earlier?

  • //

Hi, I haven’t try this recipe yet but I’m so excited to try it! Anyway, before I try to bake them, do you think the cake will be ready in 40 mins? As my rice cooker’s CAKE function timer is set at 40 mins. I wonder will that be enough

    • //

      Hi Mimi,

Yes, I believe the cake will be ready in 40 mins. There was once I baked mine for 45 minutes only and it was fine.

Happy baking and do let me know if you like it :)

My rice cooker has rice function and steam function, which one should I be using? I tried the rice function, total cook time is abt 1hr, the outer crust looks perfect but inside is very dense, not fluffy at all. The cake can also rather flat in shape. I’m not sure it didn’t rise due to my rice cooker or the way I folded the ingredients?

    • //

Do you have an oven? If you do, you can try baking it in an oven. The recipe is just as good for an oven.

  • //

Hi, i tried this recipe in my rice cooker but it turned out very dense. My rice cooker doesn’t have a cake function, i used the normal rice function for about an hour. Do you know if there’s a difference between the rice function and the steam function? Thanks.

    • //

      Hi Lilian,

I’m sorry but I don’t know if there’s a difference between rice function and steam function. I’ve only tried this on my rice cooker with the cake function :(
