Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore (Tower Wing Horizon Club Grand Premier Room)

During our recent week-long holiday in Singapore, we had the pleasure to stay in the world’s very first Shangri-La (opened in 1971); the very first hotel of the luxury Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts Group.

Shangri-La Hotel Singapore had recently unveiled their newly refurbished Tower Wing with a luxurious new look. It features a refreshed lobby, brand new rooms and suites, three novel restaurant concepts and a revitalised club lounge.

The hotel that started it all.

Opened in 1971, the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore does not look anything like its age. Having gone recent refurbishment, this urban resort remains vibrant, relevant, luxurious and distinctively Shangri-La.

Set amidst 15 acres of lush greenery, Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore boasts of luscious gardens and gorgeous landscapes.

A beautiful big pool with refreshing fountains surrounded by large, green garden is great to spend our time in especially during the hot days.

Gone are the hustle and bustle of the city when we are here. Tranquility takes over in this luxurious sanctuary.

The Orchid, a seven-metre tall open-air orchid greenhouse sculpture nestled amidst the hotel’s 15-acre estate was built to celebrate the hotel’s 45th anniversary last year.

Also known as Singapore’s “second Botanical Gardens”, The Orchid was designed to enhance the gardens and to showcase the beauty of orchids – Singapore’s national flower.

The city disappears as we take a stroll along the massive garden.

Simply mesmerized by the beauty inside The Orchid with colourful orchids stretching along The Orchid’s inner walls and reaching up to the sky to create a stunning visual effect.

We took a self-guided Orchid Walk to discover and learn about the many different orchid varietals that grow within the hotel’s grounds. With a booklet in hand, we follow a map to marvel in the vast collection of orchids.

A tropical sanctuary continues with the lush nature-inspired interiors.

It is easy to forget we are in a busy city especially so close to Orchard Road, Asia’s most famous shopping street with the soothing sounds from the cascading waterfall and the breathtaking sight of graceful koi dancing in the ponds.

Serenity at its best.

We enjoyed basking in the elegant surroundings that exemplify the tranquil ambience of the hotel.

The unbelievable beauty of a flowing stream in the interior of a hotel creating a beautiful habitat of flora and fauna and if you are lucky, you can catch the sight of playful squirrels.

We caught a glimpse of a squirrel in the newly renovated lobby:

Not a life one but this cuddly stuffed squirrel Ayden got as a gift from our room that immediately stole his heart.

Ayden loves the stuffed squirrel

The first thing that caught our eyes as we stepped into the lobby is the awe-inspiring ceiling art installation by renowed Japanese designer Hirotoshi Sawada, known for her trademark style of fusing elegance and movement in nature. Thousands of cascading stylised leaves from the ceiling in a classy display reminiscent of nature’s grand sweeping canopies.

An indoor tropical oasis complemented by fresh hues of white and cream makes a beautiful contrast with black giving the grand lobby and elegant and soothing atmosphere.

The unique art pieces around the lobby certainly warms the heart.

TOWER WING – HORIZON CLUB GRAND PREMIER ROOM

We stayed in the Horizon Club Grand Premier Room in the iconic Tower Wing. With ONE unit on each floor, each room offers a generous 72 sqm or 775 sqf of luxury.

Welcome fruit platter with a good varieties of fruits.

The Horizon Club Grand Premier Room features FIVE distinct areas: sofa setting; breakfast area; spacious executive desk; sleeping area; dressing area.

SOFA SETTING

One of the two floor to ceiling windows that brings plenty of natural lighting into the room. It also comes with automated motion sensor curtains.

Imagine walking into a room after a long day and having the curtains open automatically to allow natural lighting in to give you a warm welcome. Such is the distinctively pampering we can expect from Shangri-La.

SLEEPING AREA

The sofa in the seating area is converted into a bed for big brother Ethan.

He was also provided with his own set of bath amenities by L’Occitane en Provence

King-sized bed for the Daddy, Ayden and I.

Next to our bed is the dressing table that opens upwards to reveal a lighted-mirror.

Look who loves the lighted mirror much?

There are two units of large flat screen tv in our Horizon Club Grand Premier Room; one in the breakfast area and another facing the King-sized bed.

BREAKFAST AREA

The breakfast area in our room consists of a dry kitchen with a microwave oven, coffee and tea making facilities and a Nespresso machine.

The drawer and mini-bar is well-stocked but do note that these items are chargeable except for the complimentary tea, coffee and coffee pods.

A cosy table for four to enjoy our meal in the room.

SPACIOUS EXECUTIVE DESK

The work desk here is generously sized with lots of natural lighting coming in through the floor to ceiling window.

It also comes fully stocked with stationery.

What I appreciate most is the plenty of USB charging ports and universal power outlets for me to recharge all our electrical gadgets at the end of the day.

MARBLE-CLAD BATHROOM

The bathroom is elegantly clad in marble. It comes with a bathtub and separate, glass-enclosed rain-shower.

Double marble-sink top.

Double-sink makes early morning rush with the two boys manageable.

We are pampered to the max with these bath amenities by L’Occitane en Provence.

Other amenities include bath salt, loofah, razor and cream, emery board, cotton bud, facial cotton, comb, tooth brush and tooth paste.

Complimentary shoe shine is also available.

HORIZON CLUB LOUNGE

Guests staying in Horizon Club Rooms have access to the exclusive Horizon Club Lounge with full range of privileges.

We had some snacks during our check-in here in the Horizon Club Lounge.

The new Horizon Club with its generously spaced seating configurations that cater to different groups of travelers.

Be it for business or leisure, there is surely something for everyone.

Horizon Club guests enjoy all-day refreshments and complimentary coffee/tea.

Families traveling with children will be pleased to find freshly squeezed juices available in bottles for quick and easy consumption.

The highlight of the Horizon Club is the impressive Evening Cocktails from 5pm to 8pm. Children are welcome in the Horizon Club during cocktail hours up to 6.30pm after which the club is exclusively for Business guests.

Wide selection of cold cuts.

Make your own cocktail with this impressive picture guide

Or pour your own wine from the wine dispenser.

Or maybe you prefer beer?

Canapes with a view.

The evening Canapés here are definitely made to impress.

We had enough food during these hours for a light dinner and proceeded to take the complimentary shuttle service that runs every hour to Orchard Road.

The excursion bus also drops guests at Hotel Jen Tangling.

We went back up to the Horizon Club upon returning from Orchard Road for a cuppa before calling it a night.

As a Horizon Club guest, we were given the option to have breakfast at The Line or the Horizon Club. Children of registered hotel guests under the age of 6 can enjoy *buffet meals at no extra cost in the All Day Dining venue when accompanied by a paying adult; up to 2 children.

Since we have already enjoyed the evening cocktail at Horizon Club,  we decided to explore the full buffet breakfast at The Line as we read rave reviews about it.

The Line certainly live up to its reputation with its endless selection of food.

We had a pleasant stay here, it was hard to bid farewell to this beautiful oasis.

Here’s a video of the Horizon Club Grand Premier Room in the newly renovated Tower Wing:

Till we meet again, thank you for the warm hospitality Shangri-La Hotel Singapore.
