MILO®UHT® UHT Bento Making Workshop

With just a blink of an eye we are now in 2017. It is time to start getting the children (and us parents) ready for school again.

That means waking up early preparing Ethan’s bento box to ensure he stays energized throughout the day. I got lazy midway last year as I found it complicated and tedious to pack his bento box and resorted to letting him buy food from the canteen.

I lost the motivation to prepare meals for him until recently after we attended a MILO®UHT Bento Box workshop and learned lots on how to maximize my time to prepare nutritious bento boxes in the most minimal time.

Senior Nutritionist, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, Nurul Iliana Ahmad shared that based on MyBreakfast Study, Malaysia’s first comprehensive nationwide study on breakfast habits involving 8,705 school children, 1 in 3 children were found to have low physical activity levels and this was especially prevalent among breakfast skippers.

“Consuming the right foods with a balanced nutrition at regular intervals provides them sufficient energy and nutrients to help improve their mental alertness so they can focus while in class, as well as keep them energized for extra-curricular activities,” she said.

She also suggested packing recess boxes or bento boxes for children before they head to school, as a simple solution to provide the right nourishment and ensure sufficient energy for children. “By packing a healthy meal or snack with a convenient pack of MILO®UHT® UHT, you will have ease of mind knowing that your children will not get hungry or go through energy deprivation once they are out of your sight.”

Hands-on education was conducted during the workshop with easy illustrations on packing recess boxes with the right nutrition in collaboration with Kelab Bekal / Bento Malaysia.

Yan Diana, admin of Kelab Bekal / Bento Malaysia demonstrated three simple recipes that can be prepared in 10-15 minutes.

She shared that it is important for us to have the right ingredients and materials ready in the kitchen to ease food preparation. By stocking our kitchen with sufficient food, it will make it a breeze for us to assemble bento boxes for the kids effortlessly.

A good bento box should not only consist of nutritious food but must be appealing to the kids to encourage them to look forward to meal times.

Two out of three of Yan Diana’s lovely bento creation that was demonstrated to us that day during the workshop.

Next came the interesting part of the day where mothers are challenged to prepare a bento box for our children. We were given 30 minutes to either prepare a bento box based on Yan Diana’s demonstration earlier or create something entirely on our own.

Ethan and I decided to try making a Pikachu chicken sandwich bento using only knife and scissors as our tool.

Not bad for a first timer making a Pikachu. Can you see a POKE Egg there? That was a last minute inclusion

TEN kids were then given 5 flags each to be placed into their favourite bento boxes.

It was exhilarating to discover my bento box received SEVEN flags! 7 out of 10 kids love my creation. Haha *proud mummy* <3

Our Pikachu Chicken Sandwich Bento won the 3rd Prize of a Nestlé hamper worth RM100 :-D

I realized my past recess boxes has been a failure as I prepared it according to what I think he should be eating and not based on what he LIKES. By making this Pikachu chicken sandwich bento, I made it appealing and interesting enough for him to want to eat it. Even lil’ Ayden insisted to get a bite of that Pikachu sandwich!

I took 15 minutes to prepare that Pikachu sandwich but I believe with more practice, I can be like Yan Diana and will be able to churn out an interesting bento box in just 5 minutes! Packing a nutritious meal or snack can be fun and does not need to be complicated while ensuring that the kids have enough energy to focus and do their best at school.

Congratulations on your success! I agree that you should make what he likes. My wife also made bento boxes for my breakfast in office when she had the time. I felt like a happy kid again.
