Ramadan TV Ads – Controversial and “Racist” TV Ad
If you’ve been reading my post, you’ll notice that I’ve posted several Ramadhan food reviews lately. In all these reviews (except one), I did my entries bilingual in respect of my Malay readers. Today, I went for another Ramadhan food review. It was different this time around as unlike those Ramadhan food reviews in the past weeks, this time around the Muslims are already fasting. It was okay when I went around taking snapshots of the food but it got weird as we began to sample the dishes while they are still fasting. I resorted to not eat until the Muslims break their fast, then only do I feel comfortable going around the buffet line for food.
We had a very lovely dinner tonight; the ambiance was great, the presentation was marvelous and location was superb! We had a great time chatting away even after we finished dinner. Then I got home and received this YouTube video in my email.
Update: DANG! They removed the video AGAIN!
As I was watching that video, it hit me hard when I was at point 1.00 onwards. Why? Because I was dressed that way tonight. I was dressed in this…
There, that was exactly what I wore tonight to the Ramadhan review. Inappropriate? It was a dinner at a resort by the pool side. I did not think much about wearing the above until I saw that video. What was the Ad trying to say?
“DO NOT WEAR TIGHT AND REVEALING CLOTHES”?
Gosh, if you look at the very beginning of the Ad at point 0.01, there was this lady wearing sleeveless but nothing is being said about that and us wearing this is considered tight and revealing? There was not even a hint of cleavage, just lots of arms and this is offensive?
I don’t know about you but I don’t see any Ad telling people not to eat beef in front of a certain race or anything close to that so why this? Why?!
Update:
Here are the movie stills in case the YouTube video got removed again..
Ad #1 DO NOT BE LOUD OR OBNOXIOUS
Ad #2 DO NOT BE GREEDY AND EAT IN PUBLIC
Ad #3 DO NOT WEAR TIGHT AND REVEALING CLOTHES
I sincerely think for what is worth, he should be covering HIS eyes instead of his daughter’s! -_-
Well, you are suppose to be wearing this….
What about the lady announcer then? Why is she wearing figure hugging outfit?
And that lady? What is she wearing?
No wonder I feel funny about this ad when I first saw it yesterday!!
kinda lame ad really. hmm
As Muslim, i suggested you to just ignored the racist ad by Media Prima (8TV) . it's not really represent all Muslim in Malaysia.
I was bit shocked to watched the ads, but as we all know this not first time, MEdia Prima have come up with racist issue on tele. We hear it everyday on tele too.. As i mentioned above, it not really represent all Muslim in Malaysia.
Cheers!
Fain Wahab
Blame the advertising company – that's the kind of people the universities are churning pout these days. Not creative…and not sensitive! I hear they've taken off the add – not going to air it anymore.
P.S. If you look at the back, that woman is wearing a red blouse with a plunging neckline…so revealing and so figure-hugging PLUS no tudung. I'm sure she's not Chinese…
Hmmmm….I just watched the clip. I think the message is this – Please don't get carried away. BOYCOTT THE RAMADHAN STALLS…no need to go and buy. If you look at the ones here, you can see who actually support them? Without those people, they would not have very much business…sure to close shop every soon.
lame lame lame *WTF*
oi oi, don't blame university or what wei,
I am advertising student oso, and I don think that way,
Don blame anyone for things such as this.
It is just bad because they made a not-so-good comparison and took the wrong examples for such ads.
Saying it a bad and racist ad is one thing, but blaming it on others is another thing.
speechless. :x
I think i would do a better job than that, seriously speaking,,, that ad is just bad bad bad,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so shallow and tasteless,,,,,,,,,
oh..just becos i want to visit those stalls, i need to dress like them??
Frankly I like to wear sleeveless and hot pants everywhere I go, just because of our weather is damn hot, how not to be looking hot then?
The ad was over the top. It's outright stupid, but I do understand where their coming from. It's not a matter of race, it's matter of religion.
Allow me to explain so you would understand a bit.
We were supposed to "take care of our our senses" during this Ramadhan, which means take care not only mouth (no eat and drink and no talking inappropriate things) take care of our ears (no hearing inappropriate things) and take care of our eyes (no watching inappropriate thing). Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you dress wrong and u do have the freedom to wear anything you want, but for us, we're suppose to not look at it. but when it's in front of us, how can we not look right?
So perhaps what they wanted to convey is to be considerate. Only the way they did it is wrong, and creates such a mess. They assume everyone knows this when in truth, not a lot of non Muslims understand it. Heck, I think many of Muslims themselves don't get it.
And suitapui was right, that woman in red is also something we "shouldn't look at". She has the absolute wrong dress code in all versions of this ad. They really didn't think this through~ haisy
Speechless. They call this an ad?
Can't control if others want to eat beef in front of the race which's not suppose to eat beef, still can control not to eat, if we're not suppose to…… Just like Muslim can't control if other races wanted to wear anything they want, but they can absolutely control their own eyes to look at other places if they think the girl in front of them are not wearing inappropriate for them…..
But since we're in multiracial country, I think all of us need to do our part and respect others' religion, reasonably…….
Too late the video was taken off..dunno head or tail all I can guess from the comments the ad is no that good so not missing anything.
They have good intention but perhaps wrongly done, thus send wrong or misleading message. However, I can't comment much as I did not manage to watch the video.
do's and don'ts are for kids.. grown ups like us don't need that as a reminder :)
its been remove how to see?
Taken off already ….. however, no such thing in Singapore.
Awww…. Didnt get to watch the video, they took off already. SAD!!
I don't get it la, say 1Malaysia but they always do something stupid to offense Chinese.
Guess after all these years, we’re still freaking close-minded, imposing our will on others. Please check out Indonesia, the world’s most populated Muslim country and you’ll find out how open and tolerant they are. Sad to say, I don’t think we’ll ever get there…
This is too much already. Really shocking. -___-
manage to squeeze some glimps before they remove the video.. muahahha… and YES, it's damn plain lame and full of s***…. I wonder what happen to the producer and all the rest… but the most d*** one will be the one acting on it… never think and just accept any chance to be appear on TV!!!!
I read the apology statement by 8tv in the papers today. Thought I could catch the video to see how bad it is but too late, they have all been removed… cheh!
im sorry u face this. i cant view the ad (video is taken down?). but i know what u mean.
in any case, u read reports after reports on how malaysia may even loose to indonesia, a country whom many malaysians think are more conservative.. in fact, they are not as conservative as us.
malaysia is a beautiful country and all. but there are a lil too many bad apples at the top who spoils the country. its no surprise many are leaving, when given the opportunity.
after blaming all the main parties, i would also blame that dman chinese girl for acting in this disgraceful advertisement

Wah! Why you wear so sexy to the Ramadan buffer review?! OK just kidding haha!!
I mean buffet *typo* : D
Such an offending ad! I also shocked by it but then you remember a previous ad some time back where a Chinese guy ask another Chinese guy for direction and the latter refused to reply. Instead he turned to a Malay guy and told him he knew what the Chinese guy was asking but he did not want to reply because he only speaks Malay! In the end, the Chinese guy who asked for direction apologized. WTF!!!
