Outdoor Learning Activity for Toddlers

Big brother Ethan is still feverish hence he skipped school again today. In the evening, the weather was very beautiful; sunny and windy so I brought them to the playground for some fresh air and sunshine.  After spending about half an hour playing on the playground equipments, I introduced a simple color learning activity for Ayden. It is always fun to learn outdoors as the resources are endless. For today’s activity, I suggested for the […]

The Learning Process

Art subject can be fun and interesting but more often than not, parents and students don’t see it that way. For example Ethan brought home his latest art project last week. It is a texture and color art work. His teacher gave him a piece of paper with a printing of a robot on it. He is required to find surfaces with textures, place the paper on it and color; making prints on the robot along the […]

Wrapping School Books

Ethan had been unwell since Monday evening but on Tuesday insisted to go to school as his fever subsided. We allowed him because there was no point arguing with him as he was very determined and looked okay then. But he came home on Tuesday with high fever and feeling nauseous. I did not allow him to go to school on Wednesday and made him rest at home instead. He kept himself busy doing his homework when […]

Homeschooling a Toddler – Reading Activity

The reason I prefer to homeschool Ayden than to send to playschool is because I can guide him as and when he is most comfortable and feels like it. This is especially important during reading session as it will be almost impossible to teach a toddler when he is sleepy and cranky. At 16 months old, reading is not limited to word cards though I use mostly wordcards for our reading lessons. I introduced word cards […]

Homeschooling a Toddler – Colour Sorting

Continuation from our first homeschool activity of beading/threading, we are going to proceed with the second activity a toddler can do at home today. It is never too early to expose a toddler to the world of colours. If you watch your toddler closely, you’ll discover that he/she will usually have a preference towards a particular colour. Always start with that colour to capture his interest.  My 16 month old Ayden loves playing with building […]

Homeschooling a Toddler – Beading Activity

It’s the second day of school for the big brother Ethan and Ayden is left alone at home with me. Now that Ayden is 16 months old, I can start ‘homeschooling’ him just like what I’ve done with the elder brother years ago. By ‘homeschooling’ I mean keeping Ayden occupied by giving him lots of playtime to improve his fine motor skills. Parents these days have all the luxury to splurge on their kids when […]

Samsung KidsTime App: Recap and Conclusions

I’ve written a couple of blog posts on Samsung KidsTime. You may refer to them by clicking here and here. Today I’m going to recap some of the app’s main features and conclude my findings and observations. Before that, I also want to review some of the games and activities on Samsung KidsTime. There are several categories such as: I can SOLVE. The games under this category focus on Math. Ethan’s favourite is the one […]

Samsung KidsTime Apps for Kids

Remember I mentioned in my previous post that we went for a video shoot last Saturday? Samsung KidsTime is a new application that helps in managing and improving child development. Ethan and I were introduced to Samsung KidsTime on the […]

Baby Sign Language

I bring Ayden along with me all the time for my blogging events and most of my blogger friends are amazed at how well we communicate. Well, Ayden can’t really speak yet. All he can say now are just THERE, MILK and BREAD but what he can do is communicate with us via baby sign language. I read about baby sign language before Ayden was born. I learned that babies understand though they can’t really […]

How to get your kids to do their revision?

It’s the exam week this and next week. Today is an off day though to accommodate the UPSR exam. Since last weekend we have been struggling to get Ethan to do his revision. Remember in my post here I mentioned I had not a productive weekend? That was because we deliberately stayed home so Ethan can do his revision but guess what? He did not. He chose to play instead. My blood boiled telling him […]

Hand and Footprint Sun

It’s the school holidays and that means having Ethan at home all day, all night, all week :D To keep him occupied, we did an artwork yesterday. We did a Hand and Footprint Sun. And paste them. Finally, he drew a pair of […]

School Injury Insurance Claim

Ethan was involved in an accident in school recently. A student knocked into him at the staircase causing an injury to his head. The student (Year 5) carried Ethan into the office for initial treatment. The school’s person-in-charge then called Ethan’s father to take him for further check-up. The father brought him to our family doctor where his wound was checked and cleansed. I’m not sure if it was the doctor or the teacher who […]

Choosing the Right Book for Babies

When it comes to books for babies, remember this ONE rule – wipeable. I always get glossy wipe clean books for babies. The reason being they won’t easily tear or clump when soaked with baby’s saliva and at the end of the day we can easily wipe them clean and keep them away.  I have this old book of Ethan’s that is not a wipe clean book. It’s a touch and feel book so I […]

SJKC Primary One Orientation Week

Just as the year-end school holidays started a fortnight ago, Ethan had to go to his primary school for a two-week orientation. We paid for this actually, RM130 for 2 weeks (4 hours/day) inclusive of food. We asked Ethan earlier if he wants to join this orientation and excitedly he said YES so we signed him up on the day we confirmed his registration in this school. With Ayden keeping me occupied, I had not […]

How to draw the STAR of our Jalur Gemilang?

With Merdeka Day just around the corner, Ethan has been learning a lot about patriotism and singing the Jalur Gemilang and Satu Malaysia songs everyday in Kindy. I told him that my star always ended up […]

Learn Physics at Petrosains KLCC

Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie and Michael Faraday. What do all 4 of them have in common? No, it’s not their WACKY hairstyles!! It’s PHYSICS! Physics i.e ‘knowledge of nature’ is the natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion through space and time, along with related concepts such as energy and force in order to understand how the universe behaves. The kindergarten that Ethan is attending is kinda ‘weird’ in a sense that though they have Art & Craft in their timetable, they don’t do much BUT they’d encourage us to sign Ethan up for the additional Art & Craft classes held every Thursday AFTER schooling hours with an additional fee. How to Remember the Order of the Planets in our Solar System

We live on a ball of rock called Earth in a vast expanse called space. Besides us, there are other planets, billions of stars, and other bits of rock and dust in space. The name for all this stuff is the Universe. Ethan came home from Kindy the other day with this box filled with planets. I find it very creative that the teachers got the kids to paint a tissue box black and paste […]

Telling Time

Ethan loves wearing watch. He has several watches, some still functioning, some the strap kaput-ed and some just went missing >_< Most of his watches are just RM5, bought from Daiso. I don’t buy him expensive watches as I don’t see the need for a kid to strap on hundreds of dollars on his wrist. While shopping the other day, Ethan saw this Adidas watch that he loves very much. It was priced at over […]

Second chance at preschool

If you have been following my blog or my FB, you’ll know that we enrolled Ethan for Kindy for the very first time this year in March. Never in our dreams did we expect it would be such a nightmare. How do you deal with a school bully?

It has been Ethan’s dream to attend preschool since he found out his other friends are also attending it. We had no choice but to give in and let him experience what Kindergarten is all about. I thought since Ethan is already doing well academically, the more important factor of preschool is to socialize hence I did not bother to go for any ‘branded franchise’ kind of Kindy but to just enroll him into the […]

Home-school vs Kindergarten

I’ve been home-schooling Ethan since young until early this year. I planned to home-school him all the way until he goes to Primary 1 next year. That is until his friends in the playground asked him why isn’t he going to school. Ethan then started questioning me about school, about Kindergarten. We started talking to Ethan about Kindergarten and the possibility of him attending one. The thought of having friends to study (and play) together […]

After attending the Beaconhouse School of Tomorrow conference, a quote by Alma Haris lingered in my mind even until now, “If we want 21st century learning, we can’t have 20th century systems”. Ethan’s BaoBei teacher told him last Friday to bring an empty cut bottle to class on Monday for a project. They are learning about plants and as usual in BaoBei, every topic is followed by some practical learning. Do we really need cell phones in school?

I am horrified to read about the decision to allow mobile devices to be brought to school starting next year in our country. When dining out, just look around you. Most children are no longer interacting with each other these days. They all got their head burried into their mobile IT gadgets. A reunion of any sorts no longer holds any virtue of togetherness. What we get these days is a group of humans put […]
