Growing Pineapple in A Pot

I bought a whole pineapple from a grocer store about 3 years ago. A good breed pineapple. I remember it was selling at RM8.90 per fruit. It was very juicy and sweet. I took the crown, placed it in a pot and left it there in my porch.

I did not tend to it. I simply left it there to fend for itself as I wasn’t sure if it will bear any fruit or not being in a pot.

Earlier this year when we repainted and did some renovation works for the house, I wanted to get rid of my pineapple plant as it was taking too much space and not producing any fruit. But Darling told me not to and suggested for me to place the pot outside our house instead. So I did. I left it out of the gate in a ‘public’ area.

After we were done with the renovation works, I noticed something growing in the middle of the pineapple plant.

Looks like my pineapple plant finally decided to bear fruit. It was early March when I noticed it and it looked like this:

By the end of March, I got this:

Mid April, my pineapple looked like this:

I finally harvested my pineapple several days ago. So from the moment I noticed the bud in March till harvest in July is about 4 1/2 months.

I let the pineapple sit in my kitchen for a couple of days until it turns yellow all over and give out that fragrant pineapple scent.

That’s when I chopped off the crown and cut the pineapple.

That is all that is left of my petite pineapple after I was done skinning and removing the eyes.

My pineapple was so juicy and sweet, just like how I remember its mother was.

I took the crown and placed it in a pot again. This time, I shall shower it with more tender loving care hoping that I won’t have to wait another 3 years before harvest time.

I made a video of my cute little pineapple. It also shows how I plucked it from the plant. I was supposed to cut it out but it did not work so the next best thing to do is just to pluck it out with my hands.

I just like to see what I can grow. Once I’ve achieved it, I move on to other crops.

Didn’t know the pineapple is grown from the crown, I shall do this next time if I buy pineapple :)

And wait for 3 years before harvesting too? Lol!

3 years is a mighty long time. I’ll just go out and buy. LOL!!! But of course, there is so much satisfaction from growing and eating one’s own. Good luck with the next one!

I buy. I buy a pineapple every other day. I eat it every day. I just wanted to try growing one myself to see how long it takes and agree with you, 3 years is a mighty long time. I hope I can expedite the growth and harvest this time around.

Wah, three years is that sort of dedication I probably won’t have..
Then again I have 2 avo plants that’ll take 5-10 years before fruiting, if it ever does.

Keep the plant, you never know it may bear fruit again. Mine bore me fruit 3 times. Last time was last year around CNY. I also regrow the pineapple and it bore fruit once. Mine is much smaller. A miniature and more of decorative pineapple, like the one you find people selling during CNY.

    Congratulations!!! ONG LAI!! Huat Aaaaar!
You should place it under the direct sun always and should get the fruit yearly like the Johorean farmers. If you put little fertilizer and water often, it would become big & sweeter!
