Kid Normal Series Book Review

Let’s talk about what Ethan is reading at the moment.

He’s over the Wimpy Kid (he has read them all) and is now into Kid Normal.

These hilarious adventure series are the first from popular radio personalities Greg James and Chris Smith, featuring brilliant illustrations by Erica Salcedo.

The first book – Kid Normal introduces us to 11 year old Murph Cooper reluctantly trying to adjust to moving to a new place (again) and attending a new school (his fifth to date).

“They were four grey shirts – the shirts he’d worn on his last day at his last four schools. The first was covered with signatures in felt tip: it had been a tradition there that if someone was leaving, everyone got to write a farewell message.

We’ll miss you, buddy, from Max
Stay in touch, superstar! Sam
Don’t leave us, Mighty Murph! Lucas

There were other signatures and messages too, covering most of the grey material with cheerful, multi-coloured letters.

Don’t leave us!”

” The fourth shirt was clean and unmarked.

He’d made no friends in the last year. He’d been convinced, and rightly so, that one day soon his mum would break it to him over dinner that they were going to have to move again…..”

I knew right then I had to finish reading this book. I emphathize so much for Murph…

Murph’s adventures begin when his mum enrolled him at a school for superheroes by mistake. Unlike other students in that school, Murph has no special abilities whatsoever.

We are also introduced to a villain character, Nektar – a big bad guy who is half man and half wasp with evil plans.

Ethan told me he loves the writing style of Greg James and Chris Smith. He is so drawn to the character Murph and felt like he is there, at The School with the Super Zeroes (his classmates).

In the second book – Kid Normal and the Rogue Heroes, Murph is already running a team of crime-fighting superheroes. It’s not easy though as he has to be discreet and is not allowed to tell his mom about it.

The third thrilling adventures continues in Kid Normal and The Shadow Machine. In the beginning part of the book, besides the usual Murph’s point of view, we get to see it from Mary’s perspective and l must say it is quite interesting for a change. It gets better in the latter part of the book when the Shadow Machine finally makes an appearance. I won’t spoil it for you as the fun lies in discovering the Shadow Machine and what it does. I really enjoyed how Murph handled it. The ending of this third book is simply amazing. Makes me wonder what the next book will be like.

I am surprised I read all three of these book meant for Ethan’s reading pleasure. I read them while he is at school and like him, I just can’t stop until I get to the end of it.

Not all heroes have superpowers. It’s time for Kid Normal to become a hero!

Ethan got an A4 character folder too as it comes FREE with every purchase of Kid Normal book (available while stock last in Singapore and Malaysia only).
