Learning Drums On Your Own

When I posted the above video of me playing Song 2 last week many of you asked how exactly I learned to play the drums. How do I know what to hit?

I remember how difficult it was when I first started. I wasn’t even able to coordinate both my arms and feet. I can read the notes but my limbs just would not work together. But I got better with lots of practise.  My coordination improves tremendously. My mind is sharper now as I am no longer sitting idle at home when both the boys are in school.

Best of all, playing the drums is actually a really good workout. I sweat buckets after each session. It is also an effective stress reliever as I feel good each time I play.

Back to your question, how do I know what to hit?

Drums, just like other musical instruments have notes to it. I refer to the notes to play. I learn using Ayden’s notes with Youtube as my guide.

I don’t attend formal drum lessons because shy-lah so old already. I am now able to read Grade 1 and 2 drum notes. Ayden is already in Grade 3 while big brother Ethan is in Grade 8. They both guide me when I am lost.

I started with Grade 1

How does Grade 1 sound like? Watch this video:

This is Grade 1 in the 2018 Trinity Rock & Pop Drums syllabus. In this video you can see me referring to the notes in front of me to play.

Age is just a number. Slow and steady, I know I can do this.
