Chinese New Year Offerings @ Dorsett Kuala Lumpur

In a little over 2 weeks, we are going to usher in the lunar new year. Have you make your Chinese New Year reunion dinner reservations? I heard most restaurants and hotels are already almost fully booked.

Time has certainly changed. If over a decade ago Klang Valley can be quite deserted during festive seasons, these days more and more people choose to celebrate right here in the city.

To celebrate the year of the boar, Dorsett Kuala Lumpur is offering 3 set menus. Each set menu’s pricing caters for a table of 10 persons with prices starting from RM1288 nett to RM1488 nett which includes a pot of Chinese Tea.

Check out their website for the full Chinese New Year menu.

In celebration of the Chinese lunar calendar’s most important festival, Chinese New Year, numerous dishes with significant meanings are savoured. Yee Sang is one such traditional dish. It is symbolic of good luck, prosperity, health and all things auspicious.

The 3 set menus offered at Dorsett Kuala Lumpur come with different sets of Yee Sang but if you are looking to get a Yee Sang takeaway for your family, you can also look at pre-ordering individual Yee Sang boxes from the Yee Sang ala carte menu of Checkers cafe.

Jelly Fish Yee Sang RM108nett
Vegetarian Snow Pear Yee Sang RM108nett
Thai Style Tiger Prawn Yee Sang RM138nett
Salmon Yee Sang RM148nett

For our dinner sampling the other day, we had the appetizing Vegetarian Snow Pear Yee Sang. The sweet and juicy pear slices blend well with other vegetarian ingredients.

The customary chopstick-pose before the tossing began.

The popular custom is to toss the ingredients high in the air with joyful exclamations of “Loh Hey” (which literally means ‘move upwards’). The significance of the tossing is to wish for abundant luck and happiness for all.

The hearty and nutritious Braised Superior Seafood with Crabmeat comes in a sea of treasures.

Roast ‘Pei Pa’ Duck with Sweet Sauce

The strength of this dish lies in the special sweet sauce that is made up of garlic, minced bean sauce, chili sauce and seafood sauce. The flavor improves the longer the sauce is cooked and we were told that the Chef leaves the sauce on slow simmer for up to 5 hours for best tasting sauce. We certainly did not take that long to eat this dish though as the plate is licked clean in minutes!

The Fried Butter Prawns with Oatmeal is flavorful and has a tinge of spiciness not only on the outer layer of the shell but deep within the flesh. This is because the prawns are well marinated before they are coated and fried. We enjoyed eating this a lot.

The Deep-Fried Seabass with Spicy Sichuan Sauce teases my palate playfully with its spicy, sweet and sour undertone. Its unlike the ordinary Sichuan pepper hot but is deliciously coated with sweetness to give the fish a burst of flavors with each bite.

Braised Black Mushroom with Seasonal Vegetables is a must-have dish for any Chinese New Year meal.

Fragrant Fried Rice with Seafood and Silver Anchovies that bursts of flavors beaming through the delicate chewy grains of rice.

Steamed Nian Gao with Coconut Floss

The traditional Nian Gao is steamed to highlight its freshness and coated with tasty coconut floss.

Nourishing with cooling properties Chilled Sea Coconut with Longan to end our delightful dinner.

I like the Steamed Nian Gao with Coconut Floss the best! We do not have 10 pax so if only they can let patrons order ala carte instead of only by sets.

You can never go wrong with Braised Black Mushroom! :D

Wow! I am getting excited with the coming CNY after seeing the food your family enjoyed. I have not tossed Yee Sang yet.
