How to GROW and COOK Malabar Spinach

Malabar Spinach is high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron and calcium. It is also a good source of magnesium, phosphorus and potassium.

It can be used raw in salads, stir-fried or soups.

We never run out of Malabar Spinach as we grow them at home.

To grow Malabar Spinach, first we need to purchase a pack of this vege as our starter pack.

Pluck the leaves for cooking and save the stems for planting later.

Lil’ Ayden not only loves cooking, he also loves helping out in the kitchen especially if it involves water. This sweet boy of mine is such a joy to have as he can be really helpful at times.

Soak the stems in a bottle of water until you see roots growing. Transfer them into soil and let them grow leaves.

They are ready to be harvested after two weeks.

Now, let’s cook the spinach we have just harvested.

The leaves and stem contain mucilage, hence the slightly slimy texture. This mucilage is a great source of soluble fiber so it is actually a good thing.

My boys love to have it stir-fried with chopped garlic and oyster sauce. It is so simple, our Little Chef Ayden can cook it himself without help. I sometimes add chinese wolfberries (keichi) too if I am the one frying this.

I love malabar spinach and will buy it whenever I see it in the market. Will keep the stems and try growing them next time.

I’m sure they’ll grow quickly and beautifully. Do share pictures of them once they have flourished and ready to be harvested :)

He’s such a good boy, that Ayden. This is what they call kut kut chai (smooth vegetable), right?

I dont know what they call it in chinese. I dont even know it is called Malabar Spinach until I googled it. haha.

Wow! That was fast that it could be harvested in just 2 weeks. That saves the grocery market bills.

I used to love spinach all my life until few months ago. I developed rashes and googled to know there is such thing as spinach allergy. So sad! I think my immunity has dropped as I aged.

Oh wow. Spinach allergy. I never know that. You should blog about it, the symptoms and how you discovered it is actually spinach allergy. I missed reading your blog.

I like to eat this vege and have been eating them at the vegetarian shop that my friends like to go to. Ayden is such a helpful child.

He’s always at home with me so it’s good to train him to help around rather than just sit and wait for things to come his way. The best part is he actually enjoys it :D

Oh, I never buy this vegetable as I worry Kenny and Sam don’t like the slimy texture of it. Will try next time as it can be replant. TQ for the info!
