Shiok! Malaysia Buffet at DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur

‘Merdeka’ means ‘independent’ and we Malaysians will be celebrating Malaysia’s Independence Day on the 31st August 2017. The whole build up towards Merdeka Day is celebrated with pride and joy and a reflection on what makes us proud to be Malaysian.

There is another word in Bahasa Malaysia that you will hear frequently and that is ‘Makan’. ‘Makan’ means ‘eat’ and boy, we Malaysians just LOVE to eat. We live by the motto, “Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan” or in another word, we are willing to travel for food especially since every state in Malaysia boasts having their own unique and signature food.

DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur knows how hungry Malaysians can be hence they bring back Shiok! Malaysia Buffet; bringing bigger, better and more delicious dishes from all over Malaysia not only for Malaysians to enjoy but for anyone who simply loves food!

It was a Friday evening and we found ourselves in the city to experience the ultimate Malaysian favourites for dinner.

Setting the mood for what to be an amazing dinner is the magnificent view of the Petronas Twin Towers and as we set our eyes lower, we see happy people splashing in the salt water pool at DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur.

Shiok! Malaysia 3.0 is back at DoubleTree by Kuala Lumpur.

Featuring Chefs extraordinaire from Makan Kitchen, Johor Bahru and Kota Kinabalu; each known for their culinary prowess of hometown favourites, we know we are in for a great treat that evening.

Nothing is more Malaysian than having teh tarik with our meals.

Luscious, frothy pulled tea, this is a Malaysian specialty.

With thematic dining areas, we have a choice from ‘Chinatown’ to ‘Little India’.

As we entered Makan Kitchen, the Chinese dining area is on our left.

Private dining rooms are available too.

With an open kitchen concept, we get to see the chefs in action while enjoying our meals.

There is also a ‘Little India’ corner where we get to indulge in chicken tandoori, chutneys, naan bread and more.

Huge oven for the naan bread.

They have not only one but two of these ovens.

From the wide variety of the buffet spread, let us share some of the food we had that evening.

Appetizer: Kacang Pool and Fern Shoots Salad with Dried Shrimp

Kacang Pool is a popular dish in Johor. It is an adaptation of the Middle Eastern dish known as Ful Medammas and they usually eat this flavorful beans in spices dish for breakfast.

Soup: The soup we choose to feature is the Nyonya Itik Tim for the very obvious reason that I am a Peranakan Nyonya.

Itik Tim (salted chinese mustard duck soup) is commonly served to a bride and groom before their wedding. We drink this every year during Chinese New Year. The original version of the soup is with brandy added but it is common to omit that in restaurants these days so every Malaysian can enjoy it.

Noodles: Sarawak Laksa

Every state in Malaysia has their own signature laksa. Sarawak laksa gained worldwide recognition when Emily Loo presented Sarawak’s signature dish to the judges in MasterChef Australia 2014 and won their hearts.

Main dish: Lamb Briyani with Telur Pindang and Beef Rendang Tok

Telur Pindang is the Malay version of tea eggs and is commonly found in Johorian weddings while Beef Rendang Tok is a Perakian dish.

Kari Udang Nenas is a dish imported by their chef from Hilton Kota Kinabalu.  Sabah has surplus supplies of fresh seafood and combined with their neighboring state Sarawak’s abundance of pineapples, this dish is perfect to be presented here in the Peninsula.

Fish Head Curry is from Penang. Besides this fish head curry, the other curry worth mentioning is their crab curry that is a hit with diners that evening.

Roasted Duck is Makan Kitchen’s signature dish and Chef Steven makes the best roast duck with crispy skin on the outside yet moist and tender meat on the inside.

Just look at Chef Steven bathing the roasted duck in hot oil to get that crisp skin that we love to bits.

For dessert, we had this banana fritters with dried shrimp sambal. Made from Pisang Sabah, this fritter is eaten dipped in their special sambal.

Special Ais Kacang

To end our dinner, we had a lovely surprise of this humongous fluffy pink cotton candy presented to us.

As we open it, it reveals a lovely bowl of ice kacang beneath it.

Cotton candy and ais kacang, two of Ayden’s favourite treats! He had a great time melting the cotton candy on his tongue

Assorted cut fruits and cakes are also available in the buffet spread.

No buffet dinner is complete without ice-cream. They have 4 flavours of ice-cream here – yam, peppermint, chocolate and strawberry.

True to Malaysian’s love for sweet endings, Teh O Ais Limau, Sirap Bandung and Soya Cincau makes a good accompaniment throughout dinner.

Just look at Ayden’s face while he was “attacking” the cotton candy, hehehe. So fierce!

Haha. It’s like his dream come true to get such big cotton candy.

It is our first time dining here and I must say we are impressed.

We Malaysians love our food. Haha.

I want that cotton candy too! Lol.

    • //

Malaysians and food are synonym. Haha. I used to love cotton candy but these days I can only eat one or two bites. I prefer what is beneath it, the ais kacang. That one I can eat bowls and bowls of it. Best!

  • //

I want to eat this cotton candy so badly now as it brings me good childhood memories!
The photos are sharp and beautiful which I believe you shot them by yourself. Well done.
I learnt a new word here “frothy pulled tea” which tickled my ribs. I have not visited this Double Tree yet except the other Hilton @ Sentral. Looking forward to visit soon.

Thank you. Yes, I shot those photos myself using my normal compact camera.

Frothy pulled tea.. lol… macam direct translation from teh tarik la. Haha.
