Mooncake Preview: Eastin Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Mid-Autumn festival is fast approaching. We were extremely privilege to be invited yet again to preview Eastin Hotel Kuala Lumpur’s exquisite and delectable spread of baked and snow skin mooncakes.

Taking centre stage this year are these rich in taste, yet light and fragrant tea infused mooncakes.

Putting drinks into food, Chef Alex incorporates beverage into mooncakes. These tea infused flavours include Osmanthus Flower Infused with Lotus  Paste, Ginger Tea Longan Lotus Paste, Crystal Red Tea and Coffee Lotus Paste.

Our jaws literally dropped when these mooncakes were served and just can’t wait to sink our teeth into them.

Clockwise from left: Crystal Chocolate Peppermint Lotus Paste, Crystal Red Tea and Coffee Lotus Paste, Crystal Lotus Paste with Fine Oolong and Crystal Lemon Lotus Paste with Honey Comb.

Sampling all four mini snow skin mooncakes (priced at RM15 nett each), we took Chef Alex’s recommendation to start with the lightest flavored mooncake and finish it off with a bang.

We began our journey to the moon with a bite of the Crystal Lotus Paste with Fine Oolong mooncake. I love how the first bite reveals the intensity and aroma of the tea in the mooncake as though we are eating milk tea yet light enough to make us longing for more.

Next, we sampled the Crystal Lemon Lotus Paste with Honey Comb mini snow skin mooncake. Voted as everyone’s favourite that evening, this mooncake exudes a refreshing and zesty after taste. This lemon and honey comb mooncake will definitely wow the crowd after a heavy meal as it freshens our palate; opening a path for the next mooncake.

Now that we are all refreshed, I took a bite of the Crystal Red Tea and Coffee Lotus Paste mooncake. It was late in the evening as we sampled these mooncakes after dinner but my brain perks up immediately after eating this. The sense of smell was the first of the senses to be activated as the fragrant aroma of coffee filled the air and into my mouth, triggering my sense of taste.

The last of the mini snowskin series is the Crystal Chocolate Peppermint Lotus Paste. This is easily the boys’ favourite. I find it very similar to eating peppermint chocolate toffee. The only difference is this is a mooncake and it won’t stick to your teeth hence it being the Ethan and Ayden’s favourite.

We are very impressed with all FOUR mooncakes we had just sampled.

Now for the finale, Chef Alex served us Eastin’s signature Crystal Musang King Durian paste mooncake that is back by popular demand.

Crystal Musang King Durian Paste mini snow skin mooncake (RM22 nett / piece)

Paste made with fresh durian pulp giving it that intense flavor and aroma, we popped them into our mouth like as if we were eating frozen durian ice-cream

A mooncake counter is placed right in front of Ee Chinese Cuisine and also at the lobby for the convenience of guests to purchase and have them packed in a beautifully designed gift box that comes in a vibrant hot pink.

This mooncake gift box can also be reused as a storage box for beauty accessories.

Besides their delicious mooncakes, we were also treated to Chef Alex’s signature dishes for the Mid-Autumn festival.

We began our dinner with this luxurious appetizer of fabulous trio of stuffed oyster, scallop on a bed of banana and crab island.

The stuffed oyster was marvelous but what caught my attention was the scallop as it was our first time eating scallop paired with a slice of banana and we must say that we really loved it. The crab island soaked in a sea of goodness was Ayden’s favourite. He ate everything, leaving none for me

We were kept warm on a chilly pouring evening with this nutritious Double-Boiled Dried Scallop, Top Shell and Fish Maw soup. So much goodness in that one bowl.

Next on the menu was Chef Alex’s signature Roasted Crispy Pei Pa Duck

Pei Pa Duck derives its name from the Chinese musical instrument Pipa; a four-stringed lute. The duck is usually served spread out like a pear shaped Pipa. We love the thin crispy skin and the sauce goes really well with a bowl of steamed white rice.

Steamed River Patin with Preserved Vegetables and Onion in Superior Soy Sauce is cooked just right, it’s perfect!

We hurriedly took a picture of it, warning the other diners not to linger too long as we wanted to eat it while it is still hot.

I may sound biased here but it really is that good. The silky flesh is tender and very delicate. My favourite part of this fish has got to be the two pieces of fish cheek. I was over the moon when I noticed the rest of the diners only dig into the body of the fish, leaving those two chubby cheeks for me. For my future food reviews, I want to be seated with these same gang of people

Stir-Fried Prawn, Homemade Beancurd and Broccoli with Spicy Sauce

The fragrant aroma of Tom Yam filled the air as soon as this was presented before us. This dish sits on a bed of steamed egg.

We popped these prawns happily into our mouth as it teased our palate with a mixture of spicy, sour and savory flavors. The homemade beancurd is soft yet firm and goes very well with the kids.

Stir-Fried Soy Noodles with Shredded Chicken and Dried Shrimp

Stir-fried flat rice noodles seasoned with savory sauces, this is easily anyone’s comfort food.

We ended our sumptuous dinner with this nutritious and refreshing Double-Boiled Fig with Crystal Pear and Peach Gum.

We were entertained by lovely evergreen Chinese hits as well as some popular current hit songs during dinner as these talented duo performs here every Thursday nights.

Executive Chef Alex Leong and Ms Ivana Foo, Director of Sales & Marketing of Eastin Hotel Kuala Lumpur

We had a great time savoring each and every dish being presented to us as well as indulging in those mouth-watering mooncakes. The smiles on their faces says it all.

Side track a little, these boys took advantage to pose with this adorable RIMAU in support of those participating in the on-going SEA Games 2017.

The packaging they come up with every year is stunning. I love the creativity. I’m not a huge fan of eating mooncakes (a little too rich for me), but I do enjoy photographing them.

Last night I just ate the Durian McFlurry and now I am tempted to try their Durian mooncake as I had never eaten one. I am a great durian fan!!

Your photos are all lovely with the smiling boys & delicious food and I like the singer holding the big mike. Reminds me of the bygone years.

Urgh I just ate the Durian McFlurry today but I don’t like it. It is too sweet and taste nothing like the real thing. That’s my personal opinion la coz I read others who seemed to like it but not me. I just can’t.
