Nuts about Sangkaya ice-cream

We brought the boys to Sunway Lagoon last Saturday. It was a super hot day so we decided to have some cold treats in Sunway Pyramid after that. We dropped by Sangkaya kiosk which is located opposite Nando’s and Guardian.

Sangkaya is nuts about coconut and is well-known for their ice-cream with coconut milk as the foundation.

One of their new release is Gula Melaka ice-cream which I am madly in love with. It has that very authentic gula melaka (palm sugar) flavour that it feels like I am eating cold shaved gula melaka

Gula Melaka ice-cream. Two scoops is definitely not enough.

Made from fresh Gula Melaka boiled down and infused into the coconut ice-cream, it is fragrant and has just the right palm sugar sweetness. Easily my favourite, I am happy to know that this made it into their menu permanently.

Sangkaya is also well known for their ‘Signature Series’ where they serve 4 scoops of premium coconut ice cream in a half coconut shell and we had just that but this time we tried their limited edition new flavour (until 31 July 2017) specially for the Raya festivities – Bandung Bliss (RM12.20)

Bandung Bliss is a blissful reincarnation of the popular Malaysian drink Rose Bandung especially during the fasting month. If eating Gula Melaka ice-cream makes me feel like eating shaved palm sugar, this Bandung Bliss feels like I am eating frozen Sirap Bandung. So blissfully satisfying especially on a super hot day.

Ethan however requested for it to be served in a cone so we got him this Bandung Cone at RM3.90

Did I mention it was a super hot day that day? Yes I think I did and nothing is more inviting than to have this Ice Cream Campur (RM10.90) served right before us to share.

I love it because it has my favourite Gula Melaka ice-cream in it.

It is actually a concoction of coconut ice-cream (2 scoops) + Gula Melaka ice-cream (1 scoop) + coconut flesh + Nata de Coco + Cendol + Corn + Roasted Peanuts + Grass Jelly = The Ice Cream Campur! So sedap on a scorching hot day. Best!

The boys were a little hungry after all the exciting activities they had in Sunway Lagoon so we got them Bandung Blitz (RM9.90). It is a Rose Bandung flavoured coconut shake served with diced cincau (grass jelly) and a scoop of Bandung ice-cream.

I deliberately ordered this Coconut Shake as I wanted to see what is the difference between Sangkaya’s Coconut Shake (RM9.90) vs Melaka Klebang’s Coconut Shake.

The taste is more or less similar but Sangkaya’s Coconut Shake is richer and creamier as it uses Coconut Ice-Cream where else Klebang’s Coconut Shake adds Vanilla flavoured ice-cream into their shake. If you are nuts about coconuts, you’ll go cocoNUTS with Sangkaya’s Coconut Shake for sure.

Since the boys were hungry, we also ordered something for them to eat. We ordered Malaysian Toast (RM6.90)

What was served before us is the traditional Malaysian treat with a Sangkaya twist on it. Two slices of crisp toasted Hainan bread and frozen butter with Kaya flavoured ice cream. It is sure to give you a brain freeze or in Ethan’s case, tooth freeze as he sank his teeth into the frozen butter and Kaya ice-cream

We also ordered the Coconut Ice-Cream Cookiez (RM4.90) for cookie monster Ayden.

The Ice Cream Cookiez includes a scoop of coconut ice cream of your choice hugged by a couple of coconut infused soft cookies.

It was really refreshing eating all of the above. Since we had some time to kill, we just chilled there at the kiosk enjoying our cold treats. The boys definitely had a great time as they have never eaten so many ice-creams at one go but today was an exception.

We even tapao-ed home 4 pints that consisted of 2 pints of Gula Melaka ice-cream and 2 pints of Bandung ice-cream. Freshly scooped in front of us, each pint is priced at RM21.80 for Premium flavours and RM19.80 for normal ice-creams.

Here is the video of my ice-cream Kings – Ayden and Ethan enjoying their cold treats on a super hot day.

After reading this I will go try the ice cream campur. I wonder are all these selection available at all their outlets and kiosks.

    • //

I believe yes, especially the Bandung series as it is their special festive menu.

  • //

It’s nice, eh? My nephew or my wife’s actually – my brother-in-law’s son – is running the franchise, dunno which outlets are his own. Been around so long and I’ve yet to give it a try.

    • //

Eh they have an outlet in Sibu too? Or is he in Peninsular Malaysia?

I am surprised that you could tapao home! I have eaten several times there and loved it.
    Sangkaya means dessert in Thai.
