Quick trip back to Melaka and a BBQ
We took advantage of the long weekend to make a quick trip back to Malacca to visit my parents. We went back on Sunday as Saturday was a busy day for us. Traffic was smooth and we arrived about 2pm. While having lunch, my mom informed me that she will be going over to my uncle’s (mom’s elder brother) house (a stone’s throw away) for a BBQ dinner.
I promptly Whatsapp my uncle to ask if I can join. I know I am always welcomed but yeah, I just wanted to tell him I am back
Pretty ladies in a row BBQ-ing for the whole kampung.
I don’t do BBQ as I can’t stand the free SAUNA. But if got pretty ladies BBQ for us, I am more than happy to eat
Anyway, I have legit reasons not to stand there and BBQ lah. Internet says BBQ is not safe for people wearing contact lens as the sparks can burn your lens and blind your eyes. Furthermore, my eyelashes may get burn oso. Not that I was wearing contact lens nor fake eyelashes that evening but they don’t know so just shhh… hush hush
There, the whole kampung enjoying the food the ladies served.
This is the uncle I was talking about. Uncle Harry, my mom’s second eldest brother.
Let me tell you a little about my mom and her siblings. My mom stays close to her siblings. They are all in the same neighbourhood with houses just next to each other.
I owe it to my uncles and aunties for looking out for my parents when we are not around. There was once, a thief broke into my mom’s house when she was alone at home in the kitchen. My mom ran into her room and locked herself there. Crying and terrified, she called her eldest brother, the late Uncle Larry for help. Uncle Larry came to her rescue. I will forever be indebted to Uncle Larry for helping my mom during the most terrifying moment of her life.
There was once also when my mom’s younger brother, Uncle Benny, noticed my mom’s house was pitch dark at night. He decided to ask over our Family Whatsapp group if everything was alright. I rang my mother to find that they were asleep and did not notice that the power has tripped. But it was more than that. They later heard noises and commotions. We quickly alerted the family group’s whatsapp and my uncle and his son came over to assist my Dad to check out what was going on.
I remember Uncle Harry (pic above) checking out Uncle Benny’s house when he noticed that the sliding door was ajar while the family was away during one of Uncle Harry’s routine rounds around the neighbourhood on his trusted motorbike to check on each house and everyone daily.
I am not staying in Malacca and can only be back visiting once a month but it gives me comfort knowing that my parents have these family members staying nearby looking out for each other.
Anyway, back to the BBQ…
My Dad, Uncle Harry and my cousin ZZ.
From left to right: My late cousin’s wife and daughter, my aunt Maureen (mom’s younger sis), Uncle Sydney (mom’s youngest brother), Uncle Frankie (mom’s younger brother) and my mom.
The kids’ playground
The kids kept themselves occupied challenging each other to jump the furthest. They ended up soaking wet with sweat by the end of the evening
Let’s take a look at some of the food we had:
The famous Nasi Lemak and home-cooked mee siam. I went for the mee siam first because it is impossible to get good mee siam here in KL.
BBQ Chicken
Corn
Delicious Swiss Roll
The boys were singing praises for this swiss roll. I did not have any though as I had a migraine attack by the end of the dinner and had to quickly go home to rest.
Fish and sausages
My cousin Jill with a plate full of chicken. We burnt some sausages because of this photo. Happily take picture until forgotten to check on them sausages. Ended up with black sausages
This is the youngest addition to our family at the moment. He is just over a year old. I am referring to the one in blue and not the macho one in pink (my cousin’s hubby)
Darling with Asher, the little cutie.
Unlike me, Darling loves playing with little children. I can never be bothered. I find them annoying. Heck, I find my own children annoying max
Yesterday it feels just like Chinese New Year with all the delicious food and merry making as Uncle Harry always hosts dinner on the second day of Chinese New Year. It has been this way for as long as I can remember.
People say we can choose our friends but not family members as we are born into a family. I’d say, with a family like this, I would not trade them for the world ♥
Wowwww!!! Sure looks like a great party. Wish I were there. Another long weekend coming up, going back again?
Unfortunately we wont be going back again this coming long weekend as we have several things to do here :(
It is great to stay connected with family and relatives. Nice to have your uncle staying nearby, can take care of each other.
Love family bbq. Even better when I just get to eat. No need too much work. Lol.
Yes yes. I don’t like to be the one BBQ-ing stuffs for others. That is why if I were to organise anything, it is always steamboat as it is less hassle :D
Good lah family gathering like this! Your uncle’s house has big compound to accommodate so many relatives and it seem like located at a higher place? Upper slope?
My uncle’s house is indeed big with a huge compound. An ideal place to hold a party :D
I am drooling at the BBQ chicken
What a happy family gathering over barbeque. I love that good bonding and care for each other. It is not often when we see many siblings live close to each other in the same neighbourhood.
That house looks nice with elevated garden for fresh airy space. That area reminds me of the houses in Ayer Keroh heights.
So far I only enjoyed the Mee Siam at Nyonya Colours @ One Utama. Nice!
So nice that your mother’s siblings all live close to each other. You took so many good photos of this BBQ for memories sake that you must have not eaten much food.
