Angcle Peoh’s Perfect Char Koey Teow

We were in Penang late last year. Wanted to try the asam laksa at Ayer Itam market but did not manage to do so due to the kids spending too much time at the beach. That is what happens when we travel with kids. They prefer to play eventhough I prefer to go out food hunting. Imagine my delight when I read in several blogs about the asam laksa in Ayer Itam being available not too far away from me. I read that the founder of the famous Air Itam Laksa, Uncle Peoh has set up a shop in Bukit Tinggi Klang, serving really good and authentic Penang cuisine.

Without further delay, I dragged Darling out on a Sunday evening to hunt for this place.

Though I am not familiar with Klang as I don’t go there often, it is not difficult to locate this place. Just key in the address in Waze and it led us right to the doorstep.

Angcle Peoh penang mural

The first thing that caught Ethan’s sight – the replica of the famous street art from Penang.

My cheeky monkies. Angcle Peoh’s was packed eventhough it was almost 4 in the evening! We managed to get the last two available tables there. The place is air-conditioned to the kids delight.

Since it was already late and we were famish, we wasted no time and quickly placed our order. Service was really quick too as food came within minutes. As usual I’ll order noodle soup for the kids and at Angcle Peoh’s, I heard that their Pork Noodles is really good.

Pork Noodle (RM6.90) with homemade meatballs.

I don’t usually fancy noodle soup as I find them really bland for my spicy tongue but amazingly the one here is very good. Even Darling who rarely gives compliment said this is good. The bone broth is really tasty. It was the nice kind of tasty and not those that will leave you feeling thirsty later.

Angcle Peoh

Ethan finished the entire bowl of that Pork Noodle effortlessly.

Angcle Peoh curry mee

Curry Noodle (RM6.90)

Darling ordered the curry noodle and I was surprised that it came with cuttlefish. Woot! Is this how they serve curry noodles in Penang? If yes, then I like! I love sotong okay. Gimme sotong kangkung anytime, any day. I’ll never say NO.

I noticed however that they don’t serve this curry noodle with that pig’s blood cube that I always see my Penang friends posting on Facebook and their cockles are not enough bloody. I like my cockles juicy and bloody. Nevertheless, I still took a spoonful to taste and oh me, oh my, it was so good! The curry gravy is with the right consistency and the spiciness is just perfect. They do however serve this with extra sambal on the side but Darling is not that adventurous and forego that. I took another spoonful with that sambal and I was sent right to heaven though I secretly wished they had included that pig’s blood cube in.

Angcle Peoh Asam laksa

Asam Laksa (RM6.90)

Finally, the asam laksa I’ve been craving for since late last year. I had the assam laksa in Jalan Gottlieb when I was in Penang and this is something similar to that. It is served with generous amount of prawn paste and the gravy is slightly sweet just the way Penangites like it. It’s delicious alright but I actually prefer the curry noodles now. Haha!

Darling also ordered the Char Koey Teow for us to share since we have already driven all the way here. We never thought much about it until it was served before us.. SO CANTEK!

Fried Kuey Teow with Duck Egg (RM8.90)

Wow! This one dish is the winner that evening. We drove all the way here for their assam laksa but what took our breath away was this plate of CKT served with fresh and juicy cockles (just the way I like it), fat and even juicier beansprouts, fragrant duck eggs and succulent prawns fried to a burstful of ‘wok hei’. Come I give you award, Angcle Peoh. Please accept Submerryn’s BEST CKT award and hang it on your wall!

After all of the above, we ordered their ABC and Cendol to cool down our throat.

Angcle Peoh ABC

ABC Ice Kacang (RM5.00)

Angcle Peoh cendol

Cendol (RM5.00)

After trying their ABC and Cendol, I guess these two desserts are not their forte. There wasn’t much variety of ingredients in the ABC and as for the cendol, it was too soft, lacking that interesting springy texture.

Angcle Peoh sea coconut longan drink

The Longan with Sea Coconut (RM3.80) fared better that I ordered a second glass of this to quench our thirst.

If you have been frequenting the assam laksa stall in Asia Cafe SS15, then you’ll definitely know the owner of this place as Uncle Peoh’s daughter was running that stall there about a year ago before they move here. I heard that they’ll be opening another outlet in KL but I’m not too sure where. In the meantime, I’ll just get Darling to drive here again for their CKT and maybe try their rojak and other dishes that I did not get to try that evening. After all, my tummy can only stomach so much at one time :D

Nice! If the assam laksa is as good as the one in Ayer Itam in Penang, I’ll love it! :)

    • //

I haven’t got the chance to try the one in Ayer Itam but according to many others who did, they said it is similar. Go try it yourself one of these days :)

  • //

I’d have the pork noodles…and the char kway teow…and the cendol! Not really into curry mee or Penang laksa or ABC. But they all look very good!

Uncle’s surname is Ang or something, isn’t it? I seem to have read about this somewhere Hence the name…a play on the sound in the spelling.

Uncle Peoh’s daughter started this restaurant. If I am not mistaken Ang is her husband. I don’t know. I just know how to eat. I heard the food is good so I went and true enough, they are good.

  • //

Yes. That is my perfect char kway tiaw too. Lots of taugeh and cockles, please!

Now you can enjoy, no need go so far to Penang.

    • //

Yes yes. I am so glad I found a treasure close to home. Not very close actually but definitely much closer compared to Penang! Haha.

  • //

Angcle?? Typo or purposely one, they all? Uncle issit? XD

I think Uncle Peoh will feel sad lah, his flagship is the laksa but you prefer his CKT!… For me I will try their pork noodles first. I don’t really like Penang laksa..

    • //

No typo lah. All about marketing there. Smart people.

Uncle wont feel sad lah. I like their asam laksa what. It’s just that I prefer their curry noodles and CKT better :D

    • //

I can’t wait to go there again to eat their CKT and also to try out their tom yam fried noodles. Heard it is good too. But I bet nothing beats their CKT now. Haha. Big fan here.
