Sex Talk

July is coming and that means double celebration as both Ethan and Darling’s birthdays fall just a week apart. On the way home from school today, Ethan had a chat with his father regarding his birthday and how he wants to celebrate it this year. Talking about birthdays, that boy asked the father why wasn’t he born on 31 August just like his brother, Ayden. It would be super cool to be born a Merdeka Baby he said. Darling answered that our birth date is beyond our control and it also depends on when the Mommy gets pregnant to which Ethan asked further, “How did Mommy get pregnant?”

Darling explained that for Mommy to get pregnant, Mommy’s egg needs to be fertilized by Daddy’s sperm. Of course the question did not stop there. The rest of the conversation goes like this:

Ethan: Egg? As in E.G.G?

Darling: Yes. Egg as in EGG but not as in the chicken egg that you eat everyday.

Ethan: What’s a sperm?

Darling: Sperm is something that we men can produce that can make a woman pregnant.

Ethan: I can make sperm too?

Darling: Not until you reach puberty, say 16 years old?

Ethan: So how does it work? This sperm and egg?

Darling: The sperm needs to reach the egg to fertilize it.

Ethan: Then what? How does this sperm meet the egg? The egg is inside Mommy right?

Darling: Yes, the egg is in Mommy. The sperm will need to come out from Daddy and go into Mommy.

Ethan: How?

Darling: Daddy’s penis needs to be in Mommy’s vagina in order for the sperm to go to the egg.

Ethan: Eeeewwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Darling: Yeah… eeeeewwwwww. That’s what it takes to make you and Ayden. Eeeeeeeeew…

******

I wasn’t there when that conversation took place. There was only both of them in the car on the way home from school. My eyes almost popped out of their sockets when Darling told me that story. I was like, “WHAT?!!! What did you just tell Ethan?!! What happens to the stork delivering the baby kind of story?!”

Darling said that all the hours he spent in the car driving on the road, he has been listening to the radio and one of his favourite segment is the sex education given by some experts. He remembered them saying that if your child question you about the birds and the bees, we are supposed to answer them the truth, matter of factly. They need to know and lying or twisting the fact wont help. He said we must keep a straight face and an open mind while discussing this matter with our children.

I just fainted…

What would you do if your kid throw you this question? What will be YOUR approach on this issue? How would you handle it? Care to share?

This is only the beginning. I know with Ethan, there’ll be more questions to come in the following days or weeks leading to his birthday. I’m already shivering thinking about it. I think I’ll just use the classic, “Ask your father” and let Darling handle this. After all, he is his son. Unless I have a daughter, then I’ll do the talking…

Ayden birthday is same as my brother!! Merdeka boy and I used to ask my parents why didn’t I born on public holidays like my brother too. But my dad used to tell me because I am too naughty didn’t want to come out from my mum’s womb so I missed the date. Lol!! So obvious it is a lie because my birthdate is 1 month after my bro’s.

  • //

I really don’t know how to explain this to my girls either haha..but I think your darling’s approach is correct.

  • //

Muahahahahaha!!!! I hope he doesn’t go and try it out with his classmate that uses the f**k word. :D

  • //

Hahaha .. I think it’s ok to tell them the truth or wait for them to get bigger. My kid knows it came from the mum’s stomach but of course , he never probe the details.

  • //

Haha. Sex education starts at young age!! The baby delivered stork is long overdue. Lol.

Just the other day my hubby was telling my daughter not to kiss any boys and no boyfriends till college. Lol.

  • //

I agree with your husband’s approach. Just tell them the truth with a straight face and an open mind. Wah, your husband is really a good father lah.

  • //

Hm, it’s sounds good to me.. Definitely no more question after that.. Good, I think that approach is good.. At least, he will keep that ewwww in mind until he got a girlfriend.. :D..

  • //

Actually sex education is important, and must be handled carefully.

But when next time Aden asked me that, I think I will also fainted… :p

Merryn now you can always answer “Go ask your father” everytime Ethan or Ayden asked about where they come from.. your Darling really very professional, he used all the very technical bio-term without errors!! salute~~ :p

    That’s great sex education! :)

I learned about this from my parents too, which is a good thing coz the teachers weren’t comfortable talking about it, not even at 13 in Sains class!

I already knew all about it when I was 7 years old, my parents told me everything and I was a bit puzzled too coz I didn’t quite understand why someone would want to do that. Haha. I read it’s always good to tell kids the right thing. Great job Merryn!

LOL! “Ask your father” is really good! :D

Chloe’s birthday is 13 Aug… just terbalik from 31 :p She recently asked about this too. I had difficulty answering her cos I wanted to tell her the real thing but the words just couldn’t come out of my mouth. Luckily I was prepared…shoved her a book (abt birds and bees for kids, siap got pictures and all) and asked her to read it. After that I just explained some details to her, which was much easier :)

it was my dad who first taught me about anatomy & reproduction & i’m with your Darling on this— i would just approach the matter very matter-of-factly. because it is a fact of life, lol. daughter or son.
