How to Remember the Order of the Planets in our Solar System

We live on a ball of rock called Earth in a vast expanse called space. Besides us, there are other planets, billions of stars, and other bits of rock and dust in space. The name for all this stuff is the Universe.

Ethan came home from Kindy the other day with this box filled with planets. I find it very creative that the teachers got the kids to paint a tissue box black and paste the Sun and Planets according to their order in the Solar System.
Space and planets

The only thing is that the box is too small while those planets are too big hence the ‘curved in’ sequence..

I am amazed that Ethan can remember the sequence of all the planets. Well, he is a fan of The Solar System and even requested for us to buy him this Big and Busy Space book when he was younger:

order of planets

But how do we actually memorize the order of these planets? I can never get it right during my schooling days. I can memorize the colours of rainbows but I can never remember the order of planets in our Solar System.

Today, I googled it and found this:

550px-Remember-the-Order-of-the-Planets-in-Our-Solar-System-Step-1

Wikihow taught me to write “My very easy method just speeds up names.”

550px-Remember-the-Order-of-the-Planets-in-Our-Solar-System-Step-2

Next to each word in the sentence, write down the name of a planet according to their First alphabets.

What about Pluto you asked?

pluto no longer a planet

According to Ethan’s Big and Busy Space book, Pluto was regarded as a planet until 2006, when astronomers renamed it a ‘dwarf planet’. This is because it behaves differently from the other planets. There are two other dwarf planets in the Solar System – Eris and Ceres.

Ethan loves to learn more about the Universe and even requested for a telescope but I don’t think we’ll be getting him that just yet as I’m afraid the Daddy might misuse it to peep at naked neighbours instead :P

Update:

After publishing this posts, many mommies (and students) shared with me their version and Ethan loves this the best:

I’m jotting that down in case I forget :P

    N – Neptune is last

  • //

Then I would forget the cue line…how? I would never forget ur-anus though! Muahahahahaha!!!!!!

  • //

LOL telescope to peep at naked neighbours?
I have trouble remembering the planets too…only can remember the first 3 closest to the sun, and the last one.

  • //

I might be able to remember their names but not in their sequence.

  • //

Somehow I love astronomy too much that I don’t need to memorise the planets when I was a kid. And that included the constellations too. On a starry night, I will point my binoculars to the stars. Now, as an uncle, I will point the binoculars to somewhere else…hehehe

ah, i always want to remember them in the correct order.. now with that, i can straight away call out their names.. errr, but then i think two weeks down the road, i will also forgotten that hint statement lah.. old already~~ :D

oh, i thot where is Pluto.. so it’s already excluded out since 2006??

Very interesting tips. Now even I would not have problem memorizing the planets names. Lol!

  • //

Ahh, must bookmark this post! Tq!

My Very Excellent Mommy Just Sent Us Nuggets, I LOVE THIS!

Now even old student like me can remember the planets names already! ^^

  • //

I wish I knew that acronym back then but I loved astronomy so had no problems remembering planets.

You know, in Primary 6 books in the early 90’s it doesn’t say Pluto is a planet. I would argue with my teacher coz I knew it was a new discovery (our books was old).

Now it’s not a planet anymore. She was right after all. HAHAHASHA

Seriously though, too many newly discovered pieces of rock are planets and then not planets anymore, it’s confusing.

I never can memorize this when learning in primary/or secondary? school… How to memorize in Chinese then?

This is so interesting. I want to jot it down too. Thanks for sharing, Merryn.
