Papier Mache Aeroplane Pencil Case
Ethan came home from Kindergarten one day telling me that his friend has this super cool pencil case that can store BOTH pencils and colour pencils. He asked me if we can get something similar for him and I said, we’ll see..
Last weekend when I was in Malacca, my eldest aunt told me about her love for papier mache. She told me how she made many papier mache coin boxes and sold them when she was younger. That triggered the idea of making a papier mache pencil case for Ethan. I thought that it will be very cool for him to have an aeroplane pencil case as I recalled making a papier mache aeroplane for him 2 years ago.
Ethan back in 2011 with the first papier mache aeroplane I made for him. He still has that aeroplane with him until today :)
Since it is the school holidays now, I decided to start work on Ethan’s aeroplane pencil case.
Papier Mache Bottle Pencil Case
We cut open an empty plastic bottle.
Cut wings and tail from used box and tape then to the bottle.
While I was doing the above, Ethan got himself busy cutting strips of old newspaper into smaller pieces.
Soak those pieces of paper in water to soften them.
Glue the paper to cover the entire plastic bottle. We glued about several layers of old newspaper and finished it off with white paper. Let dry overnight.
Paint the aeroplane. Glue a 20cm zipper on the opening and let dry.
The Papier Mache Aeroplane Pencil Case is ready.
Ethan loves his new pencil case so much but he did not want to keep his stationeries in it. He wants to keep his colour pencils instead.
He said this is better than his friend’s as this is 2-in-1; a pencil case cum toy. He told me this is even better as nobody can ever possibly buy this in the mall!
2 days and 2 sleepless nights to get this done but it is all worth it to see how much he appreciates it! ^_^
Cool pencil case! Love your art & craft room too.
Beautiful. You’re so good at this Merryn.
This is such a cool idea! Can let the kids design their own pencil case at the same times!
I like the aeroplane pencil case idea. and the glued the zipper idea is great too…

So soften the paper and glued on, will make the bottle harden?
Angeline, yes. Once the paper dried up, it is tough and hard :)
Wow…very nice. So many steps to make this pencil case..not easy ler.
so creative, i cannot touch all these stuff, for sure i’ll screw things up xD
I thought how you attach the zip there…oh glue it then it would be very easy for young kid to do this.
Wow! This is real cool! I never make a papier mache aeroplane before.
A great way of recycling the water bottle! Well done, Merryn. I like your idea.
Again, I amazed by your creativity .
This is so cool. This is so environmental friendly, creative and innovative. Thumbs up to Merryn and Ethan again.
