Astigmatism in children

A week ago when Darling went to fetch Ethan from BaoBei, the teacher suggested for Darling to send Ethan for an eye check-up since he is unable to see the strokes that the teacher wrote on the white board. I was quite surprised as I never noticed Ethan squinting his eyes or anything at home but we sent him for a check-up nevertheless.

Ethan has seen me going through all these check-up procedure before so he very well knew what to do :D

They told Ethan to look into that machine and stare at the house. They also told him to stare until he sees an Angry Bird flying out! LoL! Ethan was staring and staring and finally told them, “NO Angry Bird oso!!” Hahahaha…

The test also shows that Ethan has astigmatism. Astigmatism is an optical defect in which vision is blurred due to the inability of the optics of the eye to focus a point object into a sharp focused image on the retina.

They then proceeded to put eye drops into each of Ethan’s eyes.

4 types of drops per eye. Luckily this boy was very cooperative. We had to wait 45 minutes to 1 hour before they can conduct another check on his eyes so we went to grab something to eat first.

An hour later Ethan went into the consultation room to read ABC.

The optician gave Ethan a final test before we go to pick his glasses. Ethan is not suffering from Myopia but his Astigmatism is quite high. We also don’t know what causes astig but the only way to correct it is by the prescription of glasses.

Thank goodness Ethan is not making a big fuss with his glasses and enjoys wearing them instead (unlike his Mommy who refuses to wear her glasses).

My handsome four-eyed prince :D

i was told before that astig is usually caused by watching too much tv/computer screens…not sure how true is that though.

Ethan looks handsome with his new specs.

Oh Ethan got astigmatism too. It just like very common young children wearing specs. I do hope they will lose the astigmatism as they grow up and the cornea change. Did you ever heard about Boston Vision Enhancement Centre? They claim can fully recovered with vision 1.0 level with proper eyecare training from the centre.

i’ve never heard of that. Will google more about them later. Thanx for sharing :)

Its good to discover astigmatism early. It will take some time for him to get used to the specs. Ethan all the while also handsome, with spec and without!

      hehe.. Thanx Andrew :)

Recently Terry’s sch also ask student to go do eye check-up, mana tau is product introduction on eye exercise/therapy machine – http://www.i-world2u.com/, only from there I found out mine also got short sight, yet to know whether he got Astigmatism. Few students went in at the same time all also got eye problem. The consultant told us that, because they use their eye muscle to focus to read small objects that is why the have short sight problem and etc…it makes them more worst when they read on white board that hav light reflection. Later I went to ask optician opinion of this machine they said u need to use it very persistant for few months in order to recover, but after that if u still use ur eye focus on small object the short sight will be back, so the best solution is wear spec, the early they wear may help them to correct it. Heard that it also carried in gene, I’m a specky since 7 y.o. carrying -675 left eye, -650 right eye.

I also heard that the whiteboard is making many younger kids turned 4 eyes these days. The iPhones, iPads and many more tablets are not making it better for them too! The optician also said Astigmatism is often genetic hence there is almost no possible way for us to prevent it.

When my mother found out, the first thing she said was, “Apa guna eat carrot everyday like that?” haha..

My son has astig too.. not sure what caused it.. but then he is not wearing the glasses… only when he beh tahan.. this is MY SON…
Ethan is more obedient definitely… :)

He looks smart with his glasses on.

  • //

Ethan looks handsome is his new eyeglasses. That reminds me I have to bring Gwen for an eye check-up soon.

  • //

Wah kecik kecik sudah pakai specs. But yes, astigmatism and all these eye sight problems could be hereditary and all the iPhone, iPad whatever “i” isn’t very good for the eye.

Still comels la it’s okay. (Y)

I don’t wish Sam wear spec at her young age but I think this is unavoidable for nowadays lifestyle with iphone, tablets and PC are their best friends >.<

  • //

It’s good you have discovered it early.

    Handsome boy there!

  • //

I had it when I was a kid too – 300+ in one eye. It’s still there, not worse, not better. My other eye compensates.

Yeah, good thing he doesn’t mind glasses – I wouldn’t wear them as a kid. :)

I started wearing glasses when I was 11. Nowadays kids started it very early and almost all kids wore glasses. Thanks to computers!

Merryn if you are free, visit Melaka’s famous eye treatment sifu who use needle to cure eyesight. Super useful for kids. It is somewhere nearby Southern Hospital Melaka and opposite St Peter’s Church.

Needle??! Yikes!! No way I’m gonna let him poke Ethan’s eyes! :O
