Drumming dilemma
Some of you knows this story already lah. The story about Ethan getting rejected from a particular yang mahal music school *YAngMAHAl*
It happened when we were shopping and since Ethan has been pestering us to let him try drumming, we brought him to that music school in the shopping mall to see what are the options. What happened after that was totally out of our expectation. The person at the reception took one glance at Ethan and told us to come back 2 years later! Just like that! Without us having said anything! >_<
I felt so stupid and wondered why we even stepped foot there when just 6 months ago, they rejected Ethan too when we were sourcing for piano teachers. It’s like they or maybe THIS branch doesn’t want to take in CHILDREN!
Anyway, when I rant about it on Facebook, Ethan’s piano teacher read it and recommended me a drum teacher. She said we could go for a trial class to see if Ethan is suitable to learn drum or not.
So we did, yesterday. And guess what? The drum teacher said Ethan is OK! He can keep the beats and tempo *or was it rhythm? hmm.. * Forgive me-lah, I couldn’t really remember what he said, I just heard he said “ETHAN IS OK”!
BUT… yeah, there’s a BUT! But.. he said it is better if we can get a baby drum set for Ethan. We were thinking of getting electric drum but hmm..
Then one day as I was shopping in Giza, I saw this baby drum set! The shop was closed so I did not manage to ask for the price.
So the conclusion is, we are going to ask Ethan again if he really wants to take up drumming and we’ll arrange from there. Who knows, he might change his mind and we are SAFE!
Whatever it is, he said he still loves the piano (that I persuaded him to learn when he first requested for DRUM earlier).
Here is his latest practice today. Enjoy :D

Tempo = Timing. :D
Ethan is gonna be a drum star!
OK so tempo it is! Haha…
Wow, really?? I guess, YAngMAHAl wasn’t that good at taking customer.. And hey, let him play piano first.. :).. Drum was much easier..
Aki,
He’s definitely still be learning the piano. It’s his passion now. But he is eager to try da drum too..
Wah! Learning drum now? So what’s next? Violin? Rock guitar? : D
Foong, violin?! Gasp! Don’t put ideas into his head! He reads this blog (and the comments too) you know …
he is going to be a rockstar and you going to be a rockmama!!!!
Well how come Yamaha dont take in young kids? I remembered learning it back in kindergarden in my kamppung eh…
Jess, the branch I went to doesn’t have JMC classes and refused to take Ethan for one to one lessons.
He should stick with piano first as the important basics of music is easier to learn from there. Drums can learn when he’s no longer cute and is eager to look macho with some muscles lol. Cold Light of Day movie review
Tony, this is the whole story. Ethan requested for Drum a year ago but ME is horrified with the thought that he’ll be making that wrecking sound at home so persuaded him to learn piano instead (which he did) but lately he has been pestering more and more about drum. It gets very obvious when I see him browsing YouTube for drum videos..
So it’s like he has that burning desire in him to take up drum but am I restricting him?
I thought as long as you pay them the money, they will take in anybody? Ya…maybe they do not want kids – some, these days, can be very difficult to control.
I’m not too sure. It’s either their business is blooming to the brim that they reject customers easily or what, I dunno.
Practice makes perfect. Regardless the age.
He will be good one day!
^^
Definitely Richard. No short cuts, just lots of practice and passion :)
from where did he get the ‘music’ genes from? LOL!
well, no worry, if you got the $$, you don’t need to go for YangMaHa coz you will have other sources coming from others.. :D
look forward to see more ‘drumming’ video..
I dunno Cyn. Both William and I are non-musical people but dunno why Ethan is so keen.
At this age, they can really think? I learnt my lesson the hard way when P decided to quit golf on the 2nd lesson. I paid a lot of money. Lessons fee burned. Equipment..if he dont grow any taller, yes maybe can use. if not burn. But i do plan to reintroduce golf when 6. Sigh
Rach, I dun know about others but I’m sure Ethan is really, really keen on drum. Even when his piano teacher talks to him he mentions drum. I’ve been brushing that idea of him for a year now.. still, he is very persistent.
I played the video when I’m working in my office. The music is soothing. Very good Ethan. I was appalled with your experience with Yamaha. Could not understand the reasoning behind why young kids like Ethan could not learn drumming. Well, seems like Ethan are blessed with musical talents, like that foongpc said…what’s next? haha
Oh please. I think piano and drum will be max lah…
Wow, Ethan played so well..got style!
Hehe :D Thanx Wenn!
Wah…Ethan got lots of music talents. He’s really good in playing the piano! I enjoyed the video!
Thank you Kitty :)
Hi Merryn,
I know this not the right place to leave a comment but I just wanted to say that your email on how you become a blogger and started using Nufnang is very encouraging. I have just started blogging maybe a month ago and felt the same way you did when my Nufnang account showed RM0.30 on the first week.
Keep up the good job and congratulations on becoming the blogger of the month with Nufnang!
Hi Devi,
Thank you :)
Good that he has the music talent. Me langsung tak ada.
Mummy Ling, u said u looking for drum teacher for big E kan? I can give u his number :)
If u can afford, get him a real drum la merryn..i mean the baby drum…let him enjoy..the electric drum x best…xde feel.. piano..drum..so ur son akan ada multiskills… let him choose bila dia dah besar nanti…teringat dulu masa kat College of Audio Engineering..i bought a drum set sbb we have to perform utk subject digital audio.. masa tu I x tau langsung main music..maybe I the only student yg x reti play any instruments…hahaha.. 2 weeks later we perform tapi I main bass…sbb member sorg lagi was very good on drums… plus dia dah main drum sejak sekolah rendah..bila dah kerja.. I formed a band and we performed masa company annual dinners & events..guess what… I became a drummer plak…hehehe
Fauzi, betul jugak. Everyone’s been telling me electric drum no KICK. The teacher told me I kena cari ‘ear plug’ untuk Ethan? Sebab dia kecik sangat kena protect his ears. Tengok macam mana lah, Merryn pergi survey dulu :D
Dulu waktu Merryn skolah pun tak reti main muzik. Budak2 lain semua hebat hebat.. :(
no worries! from learning piano, he learns to read notes, the tempo, keeping in time etc It will be helpful when he goes for drumming lessons. I would say best of both worlds already!
Yes I agree. Through piano he learns a lot and that will definitely help him in future if he wants to take up other instruments :)
let him learn both!! be a superstar one day! =D
YAngMAHAl, hahaha, really laugh die me!
wah marvelous Ethan. Haha YangMahal… well the drum set isn’t cheap at all, quite MAHAL.
hahaha..Yang Mahal tu paling mahal sekali… Nice!
He really got the talent and the interest is so clear! So different compared to my daughter. hahaha. Maybe Ethan is going to be the next Justin Bieber? Since he’s so interested in drums? hehehe.
