Mooncakes from Tai Zi Heen

Mooncakes are the perfect gift for family and associates in celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival. We were at Prince Hotel & Residence Kuala Lumpur recently to savour their fine selection of mooncakes prepared by the culinary team at Tai Zi Heen.

Colourful range of snow-skin and baked varieties of mooncakes

Never before had I eaten so many types of mooncakes at any one time until that evening where we ate TEN varieties of mooncakes!

Let me start with MY favourite..

Tai Zi Heen

Mini Snow Skin with  Durian Custard (RM23.00+ per piece/RM92.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

YES! Of course my favourite will be one of the snow skin mooncakes as I’ve always LOVE snow skin mooncakes! You should know by now how much I love durians right? I’ve always wanted to try durian mooncake and today, my dream finally came true! Took a bite and am so happy to get the genuine taste of durian. It’s fragrant and not overly sweet. Simply delicious.

Tai Zi Heen

Mini snow skin mooncakes with bittersweet chocolate and whiskey (RM18.00+ per piece/RM72.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

Another favourite of mine is the mini snow skin mooncake with bittersweet chocolate and whiskey. The rich chocolatey taste combined with the earthy sweetness of whiskey is perfect!

Mini Snow Skin with Black Sesame Paste and Egg Yolk (RM18.00+ per piece/RM72.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

Black sesame is good for our hair. It gives the hair more body and shine. I love black sesame so without hesitation I tried this and it’s good! The sesame paste gives it a slight nutty taste and though people are staying away from egg yolk, I’d say, DON’T! Haha.. the egg yolk gives it the hint of saltiness to make this a delightful bite.

Mini Chinese Wolfberry Snow Skin with Red Date Paste (RM18.00+ per piece/RM72.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

I’m a sucker when it comes to chinese wolfberries. I always have this in my fridge. I have it in my soup, in my vegetables and everywhere. Ethan loves it as much as I do as I’ve drilled it into his mind that those berries are good for his eyes! It’s totally genius for Tai Zi Heen to come out with this Mini Chinese Wolfberry Snow Skin with Red Date Paste as not only are we enjoying the delicious mooncake, we are actually consuming something beneficial to our health!

Mini Snow SKin Mooncakes with Mango Cheesecake (RM18.00+ per piece/RM72.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

Surprise, surprise! As much a cheesecake lover as myself I put this at number 5! Why? It doesn’t mean that it’s not good, it just meant that the others are too good! The wide varieties of mooncakes available at Tai Zi Heen are simply delicious and they are not merely a marketing gimmick with fancy flavours. They are actually in line with Tai Zi Heen’s promise of serving good, quality and healthy food.

Now that we are done with the Snow Skin series, let’s take a look at the baked varieties.

Tiramisu with chocolate dipped espresso beans (RM22.00+ per piece/RM88.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

I don’t take coffee so I took a bite of this with much caution. Surprisingly, a single bite is all it took to release a burst of fragrant coffee aroma! Not too bad I must say though I doubt I can take more than a piece of that without getting dizzy! *Yours truly here will get dizzy, giddy and jiggly with the slightest intake of caffeine*

Five nuts, rum and raisin (RM25.00+ per piece/RM98.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

I tolerate alcohol better than I do caffeine. Nuts are good and the raisins make this a delightful treat. It is such an interesting bite I feel like I’m snacking on energy bars!

Shredded coconut paste with sesame pearls (RM20.00+ per piece/RM80.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

Shredded coconut in mooncakes is something I never thought I’d come across here. I just had to try this. The shredded coconut paste gives it an interestingly coarse texture. The sesame pearls blend very well with the aromatic shredded coconut, it’s like eating some traditional kuih-muih.

Hong Kong white lotus paste with single egg yolk (RM23.00+ per piece/RM92.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

After all the fancy mooncakes, we are served with the old time favourite traditional Hong Kong white lotus paste with single egg yolk. If you are thinking of getting some mooncakes for the older generation, you might want to consider getting them this as sometimes original is best with the elderly.

Pandan with Single Egg yolk and Melon Seeds (RM23.00+ per piece/RM92.00+ per box of 4 pcs)

Another all time favourite is the original pandan with single egg yolk and melon seeds mooncake. You know you can’t go wrong with this good ol’ trusted recipe.

I just realised if I put together all the mooncakes that I’ve eaten, it will make MORE than ONE WHOLE mooncake! Oh my my, I’m looking like a moon already! :D
