Restaurant Brother Yat

How was your Father’s Day celebration? Good food, good company?

Darling and I did not go anywhere fancy for Father’s Day as we thought that this special day has been too commercialised these days. But not too long ago, we managed to have a great dinner with good friends @ Brother Yat Subang Jaya.

When we first arrived there, lots of question marks appeared in my head. I’ve heard of this place as it is pretty famous with the residents here but seeing it sitting right smack in an industrial area with err.. minimal decor whatsoever raised an eyebrow or two :P But all that vanished as soon as the entire gang is sitted and the famous Sauna Prawns were served!

I saw fresh prawns jumping around and then they were tossed into a hot pot. Along came a glass of wine that ended up in the hot pot too and within minutes the prawns are ready!

brother yat

It happened SO FAST that I did not get the chance to take good pixs :(

sauna prawns

Before I know it, the prawns were up in smokes! What’s happening here? :(

sauna prawns

All it took is a couple of minutes or less for the prawns to stop jumping and turn red (or orange :P), a sign that it is ready to be consumed!

sauna prawns

Beautifully coloured fresh tiger prawns. RM80 per kg. No, I did not get intoxicated consuming this as the wine is only to sauna-fied the prawns :D The outcome? Fresh, deliciously sweet prawns!

Claypot sea garoupa

Next up is the claypot sea garoupa. RM8 per 100gm. I just love anything in claypots and this is no exception. It is fragrant and the gravy goes well with our steamed rice.

German Pork knuckle

The arrival of this German Pork Knuckle with Mongolian sauce (RM45) made my heart skip a beat.  A great combination of East meets West this is guaranteed to make oink oink lovers grin like silly.  I have to admit I’m no porcine lover, I’m more of a fish person but I just can’t resist trying this crunchy on the outside yet tender on the inside dish. It is not Darling’s cup of tea though as he ain’t no fan of peppery stuffs and this dish is made up of Mongolian black pepper sauce. It’s sweet and peppery, goes well with the rice too! :D The gang laughed at me for walloping the entire tomatoes that surrounds the plate :( Can’t help it mah, I’m a fan of tomatoes..

smoked chicken

This Smoked Village Chicken with Tea (RM26 half, RM52 whole) was presented to us in its entire form nicely smiling on the plate :P It was then returned to the kitchen to be cut into pieces and then made its reappearance :D

smoked village chicken with tea

Nice bite size pieces. We were told that the chicken was first steamed followed by smoking session (there goes the TAK NAK campaign :P).  The highlight of this dish has got to be the essence. I like to drench my chicken in the gravy before scooping it into my plate :) And then I was teased if I wanted to wallop the lemon slices that lined that plate o.O

Frog

I clapped my hands gleefully when this dish was served. Immediately I knew it is “Tin Kai” aka FROG! This Bamboo steamed frog (RM40 per kg) was presented in a bamboo basket. I rarely get to eat frog dish and the first time I had frog again since decades ago was in Pin Xiang. Unlike the one served in Pin Xiang, this frog dish is steamed with dried lily flowers, black fungus, ginger and a hint of wine. I love it and took several helpings of it :D

Kai Lan

Finally something that Ethan loves! This Kai Lan (RM13) dish is his favourite! I’m so thankful my boy loves eating greens and he really loves to munch on the crunchy stalk. He had lots and lots of this.

braised pork belly

The night is just getting better with the presentation of this Braised Pork Belly (RM26). It looks so soft and inviting that I just can’t wait to sink my teeth into it eventhough I’m not a porky fan. It is braised for hours with peanuts and guess what? Me love the peanuts!

Braised Pork Belly

It is always an honour to have the owner himself cutting the pork for us :D It will ‘taste’ totally different if we were to cut it ourselves :D Hehe..

braised pork belly

Soft peanuts that melts in your mouth. I’m sorry for the rest of the gang that night as Ethan kinda ‘sapu-ed’ all the peanuts :P

Hunan Ostrich

Woot! Guess what’s this? OSTRICH! (RM16). Beautifully presented isn’t it? Who can resist this colourful dish? I tried ostrich meat once long time ago and they were so tough! But not tonite, as this is really tender! Ethan can’t eat this though as it is a little spicy.

Next up is this…

suet lin guo

What’s that? The owner grins like a little boy holding onto it as he knows most of us are clueless about what this is! Well, we were told it is called Suet Lin Guo, a kind of root vegetables. Let’s take a look at what it looks like as a dish..

Suet Lin Guo

‘Suet Lin Guo’ (RM12), stir fried with carrots, baby corn, snow peas and almond flakes. Delicious max! I love nibbling on the almond flakes and the Suet Lin Guo is actually very nice! If you don’t tell me what this is, I would assume that I’m eating water chestnut or sengkuang! He he..

By now we are all full to the brim dy yet the dish kept coming in..

Crispy Bean Curd

Crispy Homemade Beancurd (RM10). I thought this is fish fillet but after biting into them found out that they are crispy bean curd. The combination of salted and century eggs made this dish a perfect ending to a beautiful evening.

freshwater fish

Darling and Ethan.. choosing fish? :D

Don’t judge a book by its cover certainly applies here. Prawns, fish, oink oink, chicken, frogs, ostrich and more. We had it all here! I will definitely recommend this place if you are looking for nice food with reasonable price :)
