Vegetarian dish on the first day of Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is just around the corner. How many of you practice going vegetarian on the first day of Chinese New Year? It is believed, abstaining from eating meat on the first day will enhance longevity. Additionally a vegetarian dish helps to purify and cleanse out the body as well.
There is this one vegetarian dish that is extremely popular on the first day of Chinese New Year – Loh Hon Chai. My mother always cook this for us. When I asked her to teach me how to cook it, I was surprised how simple it was to dish this out.
Several days ago I taught Ayden to cook this. Ayden will also cook this dish at my in-law’s place during Chinese New Year.
Here is the video tutorial on how to cook this super simple Loh Hon Chai.
Ingredients:
cooking oil
glass noodles (tung hoon)
wood ear fungus
red bean curd
cabbage
chinese mushroom
lily bulb
carrot
dried beancurd
vegetarian oyster sauce
soy sauce
sugar
water
garlic (optional – if you are a vegetarian that doesn’t take garlic, you may omit it from the recipe)
1) Separately wash and soak glass noodles, wood ear fungus, dried beancurd and Chinese mushrooms in cold water until soft. Drain and set aside.
2) Heat cooking oil in a wok.
3) Stir fry garlic, bean curd (diluted with water) and sugar.
4) Add cabbage, mushrooms and carrot.
5) Stir fry gently.
6) Add in the washed and drained ingredients.
7) Add the vegetarian oyster sauce, soy sauce and water. Cover until cooked.
8) Transfer to a serving plate.
I often see this at the chap fan places, never tried cooking it myself. I think I would very much prefer my mum’s own version with santan – the sayur masak lemak. It has similar ingredients…and a bit more. :D
I dont practise anymore. My parents still do. Usually my mum fry some vegetarian noodle on 1st day of CNY and if we go back, we would eat it too.
My husband cooks this every cny for his mother because she likes to eat it for all 15 days of cny.
Yeah, my favourite vegetarian dish!
