3D Colouring: Coloring fun with augmented reality

It rained the past couple of days so I had to find something interesting for the boys to do as they can’t go to the playground.

Both Ethan and Ayden love colouring and painting. Usually I’ll print something out for them to colour or paint but today I tried something different with them.

Today, I introduced the boys to augmented reality colouring app for smartphones or tablets. It is not something entirely new as it has been around for some time; just that it is OUR first time exploring it so it is new to us.

To start, there are many free apps out there to choose from. You can search using keywords such as ‘3D colouring’, ‘augmented reality colouring apps’, ‘live colouring’ and more. Most of these apps are usually free with a mix of paid content to unlock additional colouring pages.

The kiam sap me downloaded the free ones and printed only pages that are FREE. I feel so sorry for these app developers as they won’t be making any money from me

As usual, get the kids to colour the picture.

Ayden’s alien; a typical two-dimentional drawing.

With the augmented reality app, the 2D alien comes to life!

It is amazing how a 2D drawing can come to life, dance and react to our touch (taps).

Colouring has never been so much fun! The boys got excited to see their artwork been brought to life. Heck, don’t say the boys, I was pretty excited myself!

Ayden has sharp eyes. He noticed his alien’s ears were green but the augmented reality alien’s ears are orange. Must be some glitch there. I’ve only tried Live Colouring app at the moment.

There are many more out there to explore such as Quiver, Stabilo 3D and even Disney has 3D colouring books!

Watch this video to understand more about 3D colouring. I bet you’ll want to do this with your kid too!

Augmented reality – that is a big word. Ayden is so observant to notice the colour of the ears are different.
