WTF – What Tasty Food @ Bangsar

I remember fondly back in those days when I was still living with my parents, my mom would cook vegetarian dishes every 1st and 15th of the month. I am not too sure the reason behind it as I was still in school back then and it was not a norm for me to question her choice of dishes.

Eating less meat can reap big health and environmental benefits but my family are not vegetarians, though every once in a while we do enjoy eating vegetarian food.

These days, we try eating vegetarian food on Fridays. The keyword here is ‘try’. I may succeed easily but the hubby and the boys often find it tough.

Last week, we went to WTF Restaurant in Bangsar for dinner.

WTF, located at Lorong Maarof, Bangsar Park started back in October 2013, by 3 partners who have all been vegetarians from birth and wanted to make a huge difference in educating people that vegetarian food is not only about leafs.

WTF stands for What Tasty Food and that was exactly what we did that evening, to find out what tasty food they’ve got to offer here.

We started our evening with some appetizers. I remember only some of the price of the food we had so please forgive me if there are items without pricing.

Bhel Puri RM12

Bhel Puri is one of the most common chaat in Mumbai alongside the popular Pav Bhaji. This savoury snack is a deliciously healthy Indian salad made up of puffed rice, crispies and salads topped with a sweet, spicy and sour chutneys of dates, chilli and coriander chutney.

When it was served, we were reminded to eat it immediately before it turned soggy.

Pav Bhaji

A creamy blend of mashed mixed vegetables with home made freshly pound spices and topped with butter. Accompanied with preservative free buns made in house daily.

It’s supposed to be a snack but to me, it is more that just a mere snack. The soft pav served with the rich and heavy bhaji with all the butter in it is such a perfection.

Palaak Chaat RM14

Next on the table is the Palaak Chaat appetizer. A flavorful mix of spinach leaves dipped in a batter and fried, topped with sweet yogurt and a tangy chutney, this dish is to be eaten immediately too before it loses its crispiness.

Chole Tikki  RM14

Chole Tikki is a delicious and appetizing potato cutlet or croquette made of boiled potatoes and spices. It is served with chickpeas gravy. To add more flavour, tikki chole is topped with yogurt and drizzled with chutneys.

Paneer Butter Masala

This dish is rich in calcium as it contains paneer (home made cottage cheese), a popular ingredient in Indian vegetarian cuisine. It suits perfectly with the meat-free diet of many in India. Paneer is a very popular ingredient for curries, particularly in the north. Best paired with a naan, tandoori roti or rice.

Garlic Naan

Chapati

Kids Burger RM12.90

The boys had this healthy burger of corn and potato patties.

Ayden was excited when it was served before him.

He deconstructed the burger and ate it layers by layers.

He enjoyed the burger so much that the Daddy asked me what meat was in the burger? That got me thinking for a while. It looks so fantastic that we forgotten this is actually a vegetarian burger with corn patties. No meat!

Just look at him enjoying his Kids Burger. I must learn to cook like this at home as this boy of mine is not a fan of vegetables but had no problem to clear his burger here. I can see that we’ll be dining at this restaurant quite often from now on.

Tex Mex Burger

As for me, I had the Tex Mex burger with red bean patty. The highlight of this burger is the zesty salsa sauce stuffing and cheese to top it off.

Darling had this Biryani Sizzler and it is so, so good! LoL at this waiter who was caught off guard as I told him to stop as I wanted to take a picture of him and the smoking hot sizzler

I love this plate of delicious Biryani with a cashew gravy cooked in a sizzling plate. I actually prefer it to my Tex-Mex burger. I’ll definitely order this again the next time we dine here. It doesn’t feel like I am eating vegetarian at all. That cashew gravy is so delicious. I don’t remember how much this dish cost though :(

Nasi Lemak Wrap

We also had the Nasi Lemak Wrap to share as I heard it is one of the best-sellers here. It was an interesting dish, a good marketing gimmick I must say but I was the only one who ate this as it is spicy beyond the boys’ tolerance. They even serve extra sambal on the side in case we need more and yes, I needed more. The boys said I am crazy!

Eggplant Bruschetta

To cool things off, we had this refreshing slices of eggplant slow cooked in a tandoor and served with a salsa.

Tandoori Platter

Darling ordered this Tandoori Platter (since I ate most of his Biryani Sizzler) and it comes in a huge plate with sheekh kebab, roasted potatoes, marinated and roasted paneer (cottage cheese) and hara bhara kebabs all marinated and cooked in tandoor. Served with a yoghurt coriander mint chutney.

Falooda

To end our dinner, the four of us shared this famous Mumbai dessert made of basil seeds, mango pulp, kulfi, dry fruit, ice cream, rose flavouring and milk – a huge big tasty dessert. There were two types of ice-cream in it, a scoop of Indian ice-cream (kufli) and another scoop of western ice-cream.

I really enjoyed our dinner here and will definitely return whenever we are feeling like having good vegetarian food.

I’d recommend coming early, say, 6 to 7pm to avoid queuing for seats as they are usually packed during dinner. Otherwise come during lunch time as it is easier to get seats then ;-)
