1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice 新怡保鸡饭店

It was a nice, sunny afternoon last Saturday. I brought the kids to this popular eatery, 1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice Restaurant in Jalan Gasing, PJ for lunch after Ethan’s taekwondo class. I used to frequent this place back when I was in college almost two decades ago! Oh my, time certainly flies!

1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice restaurant新怡保鸡饭店
107 Jalan Gasing
46000 Petaling Jaya,
Selangor

It is as packed and popular as ever.

This restaurant originates from a humble family business selling mainly steamed chicken served with bean sprouts (Nga Choi Gai) and Hor Fun noodles in Ipoh, Perak. The business since then flourished and they opened their first restaurant here in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya in 1977.

Todate, there are five 1977 Ipoh Chicken Rice restaurants 新怡保鸡饭店 located at Jalan Gasing, Sri Petaling, Damansara Jaya, Sunway Pyramid shopping mall and Mid Valley Megamall. I deliberately told Darling to come here in Jalan Gasing as it brings back fond memories of my college years.

Chinese tea pairs perfectly with our lunch.

We have a friend and her family joining us too so there are 4 adults and 5 kids that afternoon.

Their rice is still as aromatic and not overly greasy.

Signature Steamed Kampung Chicken – Whole Bird (RM68), Half Bird (RM38), Small (RM8), Regular (RM18), Large (RM28)

Kampung chickens are bred in an environment where they can roam freely and the skin is much more yellow as their staple diet is corn. I used to not like kampong chicken when I was younger but noticed that I am fonder of them now as I grow older and became more conscious towards my health.

The chickens here are fresh as we can easily tell by the texture of the chickens. The chickens are smooth and their skin a gelatinous texture. Overnights ones are tough to the bite. They can easily sell 30 over chickens during the weekends and doubles that amount during weekdays!

It is a must-have to eat the chicken with their garlic paste and chili sauce. I usually have a plateful of them within reach.

Roasted Pork (RM12)

Their siew yoke is one of the most popular items here. It is everything a roast meat should be – juicy meat with perfectly crisp crackling skin.

Honey BBQ Pork (RM12)

Their charsiew has a good ratio of fat and lean meat. They are still using charcoal fire to roast the meat, producing Char Siew that is even more fragrant, meltingly soft in texture and finger-licking good! Their char siew is kept for a maximum of 4 hours only after which, they are not allowed to be served out.

Signature Ipoh Bean Sprout (RM15)

Topped with cuttlefish and enoki mushrooms, this is new to me. I don’t remember having this during my college days. It makes a very interesting combination. They take pride in their homemade sauces and even the soya sauce here is homemade.

Ipoh Bean Sprout (Regular RM8 / Large RM12)

This was what I usually have during my college days. Their bean sprouts are transported from Ipoh daily. Only Ipoh can grow such fat and juicy beansprouts thanks to the abundance of limestone water.

Fish ball soup (RM1.80 per piece)

The homemade fishballs here are giant sized! Look at how huge it is!

Signature Fried Roasted Pork (RM15)

If you are looking for something different than the usual Siew Yoke, you may want to try their fried roasted pork. It is first roasted and then fried with their homemade sweet black soy sauce and onion.

Homestyle Steamed Tilapia (RM28 – RM38)

Their tilapias are caught fresh from their aquariums. I like this homestyle steamed tilapia using their special homemade sauce mixed with Thai Chili sauce. It is appetising and goes very well with our rice. It is just slightly spicy but Ayden is able to enjoy this.

Buttermilk Fish Fillet (RM18)

Dory fillet fried in crispy buttermilk batter and drizzled with salted egg sauce makes a very tasty treat.

Stone Pot Stir Fried Lala with Superior Soup (RM18)

This is a seasonal dish. It is only available if they have good quality lala to serve. What got me excited was the gravy. I just can’t figure out the ingredients in it that I had to request for them to ask the chef for me (they will normally oblige if you have little kids dining with you as you can always say you need to know what is in your food to check for food allergies :P). They came back to me with this list -> ginger, garlic, chili padi, soup from the steamed chicken AND tauchu sauce.

Tauchu sauce! That’s what makes it stand out from the usual ginger and garlic lala!

We also ordered this Curry Pork Skin (RM6) because we see every other tables are having it too. According to them, this curry pork skin is prepared every morning with fresh santan using their closely guarded family recipe.

We had a satisfying lunch and I am glad that after all these years, they keep up to their standard and I still find it nice to dine here. In fact, I think they have even more on their menu now compared to 20 years ago. I’ll definitely return but maybe I’ll try the one in Damansara Jaya as it is closer to us now.

1977? Jalan Gasing? How come I never saw it my whole here around those parts in 1986? Looks good, everything.

Wahhhhhh!!! You’re so young. I started work the following year – 1978.

Eeeeee…Ayden looked so happy! I would too if I had all that to enjoy!

Good grief!!! What did they stuff in the mouth of the fish? Muahahahahaha!!!!!

    • //

Oh dear, you must have missed it. One of the best chicken rice around. When I was studying I did not have the luxury to order the fish or anything else besides their chicken rice. I don’t even know if they serve fish back then. Today, they stuff tomatoes inside the mouth of their fish. Hahahahaha.

  • //

Wow! So many food on the table for lunch!!

  • //

1977! The year I were born. Haha. Must give this place a try when in KL. I am all for authentic chicken rice.

    • //

Yeah… they have been here that long and many more years to come. I first dined here as a teenager, now I’m a mother of two. Maybe next time my grandchildren will dine here too :D

  • //

    So much food… Can finish?

    • //

Can. It was after Ethan’s taekwondo. We were all very hungry as I did not have much to eat for breakfast that day.

  • //

yeah, i remember this place during my uni years!

    • //

      Ahh… time flies doesnt it?

  • //

I thought you are in Ipoh .. Hahahha. Wow .. All the food looks so appealing!! I love the chicken meat !

    • //

      I thought so too. Haha!

  • //

chicken rice is always a hot sale in the menu..

    • //

It is always a hit with the kids and on days that I cant decide what to eat, I’ll always end up with chicken rice too. Hehe.

  • //

I find it too pricey to eat there.

    • //

Is it? I find it ok for an outlet with air-condition where we can dine comfortably.

  • //

Wah looks really good leh, all those food! Really look like being transported to Ipoh!

I had a similar meal by so called branch of the famous Ipoh outlet that has just recently opened here. The less said about it the better. >.<

    • //

Hmm.. I wonder which famous Ipoh outlet you talking about ^_^

Do try to drop by here when you are down in KL. I know it is quite far for u and will be tough to ‘run away’ from your mom’s signature porridge but it is worth the drive :P

  • //

    I know this place! :)

I’ve been to this exact outlet when I came to KL for a business trip around 2004 or 2005 and a local brought us here. Very good chicken. I think they opened one outlet in between MidValley and Gardens too, and I used to frequent that quite often since it was closer but then it closed down and they moved to the 5th floor (highest floor, same as the cinema and the feng shui place) which is smaller and somehow doesn’t taste as good.

    • //

That is the reason I choose to come back here instead of the rest of their outlets though I have not personally dined in any of their 4 other outlets. Cant agree more on their chicken, indeed very good :D
