Easy Mee Hoon Kueh recipe for toddlers

Can you believe that I am still cooking porridge for Ayden at home? He is 21 months old now and porridge is still his staple food. He eats whatever else that we eat but still the bulk of his meal is porridge. Today, I tried making something different for his tea break. I made Mee Hoon Kueh.

Mee Hoon Kueh aka Pan Mee with only flour and water without eggs. I made a hole in the middle of the flour and add a little water. Cover it and using my palm, press the mixture to form a nice dough.

I made a small amount of dough enough for Ayden alone as the brother and father is not at home in the evenings. You must be wondering why I have cookie cutters in that bowl?

Well, coz instead of just pulling the dough like normal mee hoon kueh, I decided to make it into fancy shapes to attract Ayden’s attention and as you can see in the picture above, I think I managed to do just that.

He got so interested that he wants to try making one too. He ended making not one but most of them. He pressed the cookie cutter into the dough and I helped arrange them onto the plate.

That small ball of dough produced that amount of mee hoon kueh. Ayden’s favourite shape is apple, moon and bunny.

While I was boiling the anchovies based soup, I brought Ayden out to pluck some sweet potato leaves from our potted garden.

Ayden and his harvest. It’s so nice to be eating our home-grown greens :)

I added dried wolfberries for colour.

Ayden loves it. He polished the entire bowl of mee hoon kueh in no time.

That means I can make this again and you bet I surely will as the process of making it is such an interesting activity for him. To him it is play time :D

It is good that Ayden still eat porridge. My Jamie never like porridge since baby so I hardly cook porridge. He eats what we eat.

I like your pan mee. Very healthy too.

I find kids will eat anything we give them (including vegetables) if they are somehow involved in preparing the food, especially if the process is fun! That’s how I observed most of my friends “training” their kids to eat vegetables..

Ayden will know how to cook this very soon. So nice to be involved in the process of cooking for himself now and to eat homegrown vege. I love to eat mee hoon kueh. Do you have to cook it until very soft for him?
