Baby Sign Language

I bring Ayden along with me all the time for my blogging events and most of my blogger friends are amazed at how well we communicate. Well, Ayden can’t really speak yet. All he can say now are just THERE, MILK and BREAD but what he can do is communicate with us via baby sign language. I read about baby sign language before Ayden was born. I learned that babies understand though they can’t really speak yet. Their brains are not ready for that linguistic threshold but they are able to express themselves via sign language. I never had the chance to try this with Ethan but I did with Ayden and I am amazed with the outcome.

From very young, Ayden is able to show the baby sign language for milk whenever he wants milk. It’s very easy actually. All you need to do is make the squeezing action with your right hand and say the word MILK as shown in the picture below.

It makes it a whole lot easier with Ayden being able to show me whenever he wants milk. And when he started eating solid food, he learned the sign for EAT. Here he is signing that he wants to eat that bread he is holding:

As you can see, he is putting one hand into his mouth indicating that he wants to eat. Well, it is very obvious in the image above as he was holding a bread. But most of the times, he isn’t holding anything and just show me the sign of eating. That is how I know he is hungry and I’ll feed him something.

Learning baby sign language is so much fun. It’s fun for me as well as Ayden. It teaches him to speak too as after all the signing, he can now say MILK clearly. Ethan had fun learning sign language too when he sees me teaching Ayden :D

If you are keen to learn baby sign language, just browse the web. There are plenty out there. Just learn those basic signs that you’ll need to use on a daily basis. I assure you, until they learn how to speak, communicating with your baby or even toddler is so much easier with baby sign language.

Yup. I learnt baby sign language along the way. Having 3 kids, you can say I know what babies want. It sometimes amazed me at how well I understand my kids although they can’t talk. Even my hubby was amazed once a while. Haha.

Yum yum. Was that Gardenia bread Ayden holding?

    • //

Haha yeah. Red bean. His favourite ;D

Yes, my girl Shenny used baby sign language to communicate with us when she was little. She was less frustrated when need to express her needs and her understanding to us. I could still remembered her some favorite sign languages are ‘more’, ‘drink’, ‘cow’,’butterfly’,…. However, after she began speaking, she used less baby sign language and eventually forgot it when she is older.

Exactly. These baby sign language is to help them express themselves before they can speak. And they are of a great help to us parents, arent they? :D

But I did not teach Ayden ‘cow’ and ‘butterfly’. Haha. He did learn ‘bird’ though as he sees them every evening in the playground :)

Well, I hang out with my friends and their babies occasionally, I am always at a lost when my friends let me hold their babies. The babies will be all friendly with me and make gestures to me and I would just smile and then helplessly stare at the parents while they laugh :-/

SO what is the baby sign language for peeing and shitting? Hahaha

  • //

I thought the web teaches the parents on how to teach the baby to sign what they want. From your post, it seems that you are saying that the baby automatically will sign what they want and the parents need to recognise the signs by learning from the web but do all babies use the same sign language if you don’t teach them that?

    • //

Actually, we parents learn the sign first. Then we teach our babies. Once they are familiar with it, they’ll use those signs to communicate with us.
