Koufu Trendy Chinese Cuisine @ One City

Though I’m a Malaccan I spent most of my growing up years in Sitiawan, Perak. Unlike my Peranakan parents, I am quite fond of the Fuzhou food there. I left Sitiawan for college in KL but my parents remained there. Each time I go back to Sitiawan, my mother will buy me a hot bowl of lu mien from the famous aunty in the market. I remember referring to her as “pasar aunty”. That was almost two decades ago. My parents have since left Sitiawan to settle down in Malacca and I’ve been deprived of my favourite bowl of hot piping lu mien… You can hardly find any eateries selling good Fuzhou dishes here in the Klang Valley.

About 4 months ago, I found out about Koufu Trendy Chinese Cuisine, a restaurant in One City serving authentic Fuzhou dishes. I was in the last trimester of my pregnancy and had been craving for lu mien like crazy. Immediately I took note of the location and tried getting Darling to drive us there. On that same day, I somehow got connected to the owner of the place, Marcus on Facebook! I chatted with him and asked him if a pregnant lady can take the famous red wine mee suah but he advised me against it and told me to wait until I’ve delivered. Okay, so that is not an issue. I think I can wait but I definitely need to have my piping hot bowl of lu mien before I deliver. But guess what? My water bag broke and I was rushed to the hospital…

That was 4 month ago. Now, with baby in tow we finally made our way to One City to fix my ‘cravings’. LoL! Better late than never right?

We were seated nicely in the air-conditioned restaurant when Marcus walked in. I recognized him from his FB profile picture and so does he! Haha. He suggested for us to take a look at the back of the restaurant where we can dine al fresco. Thank goodness he did because we love it there. The green and open concept is so soothing to the eyes.

The first thing I did was to order the much craved lu mien. Lu mien is very subjective. It’s either you love it or you don’t due to the bamboo shoot used in this braised noodle. If you are not a fan of bamboo shoots you might find the aroma unwelcoming. For first timer, I would suggest for you to try it mixed with laksa as that will tone down the bamboo shoots scent and flavor.

koufu lu mian with laksa

Because I wanted Darling to try this much craved dish, I ordered it mixed with laksa so it won’t be too ‘shocking’ for him. Surprisingly, he loves it! There wasn’t any unpleasant scent nor flavor according to him. Everything was good. It is very similar to what I had been having back in Sitiawan and suddenly I felt 20 years younger! Yes, yes, it has been THAT long since I last had this!

koufu red wine mi sua

We also ordered the famous Premium Koufu Red Wine Chicken (RM16.90)

Sitiawan is famous for their mee suah and Koufu’s handmade mee suah is indeed from Sitiawan. Even their red wine is housemade.  The velvety smooth mee suah is nicely coated in the thick red wine resulting in a rich flavorful bite. Koufu uses premium ingredients as proven in the village chicken and Bentong ginger used in this dish.

If you wish for something less potent, you may request for the regular red wine chicken mee suah at RM10.90 but that won’t do it for me. I love mine thick and strong.

koufu kampuang

Not to be missed is this Fried Meat Wantan Dried Noodles (RM8.90) or simply known as Kampuang among the Foo Chow folks in Sitiawan. Handmade wanton noodle tossed in sweet soy sauce, topped with sliced fried lean meat and crispy bean curd sticks with some greens.  I remember having this every other day after school with lots and lots of chili oil. This time we did not add chili as it was Ethan who walloped the entire plate!
koufu long yen soup

Darling had this Koufu Long Yen Soup Noodle (RM8.90)

This is authentic Foo Chow noodles made with basic tapioca starch, flour and egg. Noodle is chewy and the gravy is thick and starchy. I jokingly told Darling that he must swallow this without chewing as it is that smooth! Flavor is kind of light so we had this with some chili.

Now, this is something you might not know. In Sitiawan, they don’t usually eat wanton in plain broth. They have it in laksa gravy!

Wantan Laksa Soup (S) 5.90 (B) 9.90

I almost forgotten having it this way until Marcus reminded me. Once you’ve eaten it this way you’ll never want to have your wanton in plain soup anymore.

koufu crispy pork

I actually did my homework before dining here and read good reviews on Koufu’s Deep Fried Meat (S) RM7.90 (B) RM15.90 so we just got to try it and true enough, it is sliced perfectly. Crispy on the outside yet still moist and tender on the inside. It is easily Ethan’s favourite. He vowed to come here again just for this.

koufu red glutonious pork

Marcus wanted us to try something new on their menu, Fuzhou Pork. Bursting with red wine flavors and Bentong ginger, this is one superb dish for confinement! Darling had quite a lot of this and ended up being ‘heated up’ at night! LoL!

koufu dessert

After such a hearty meal, we cooled down with Koufu’s famous Tang Shui. Generously loaded with 10 ingredients such as longan, black jelly, jellies, pearls, sweet potatoes, barley, agar agar and basil seeds it is a sweet ending for us.

After almost 20 years, I am finally indulging in Fuzhou dishes again. It is a dream come true and it feels like Sitiawan all over again. A friend of mine commented that she finds it difficult to locate this place. I say, use Waze as it will bring you right to their doorstep :)

Look good, most of the dishes. But me, true blue Sibu Foochow – have to try first, then only can say pass or not… Cannot judge based on appearance. Me, same as Rose…never heard of wanton in laksa soup before – not available here.
