Hong Kong Mei Xin Mooncakes

Since the arrival of my second child a week ago, Darling and I have been busy trying to juggle our time for both Ethan and the little one. My mother is here to help for a month so it’s not too bad. Ethan gets bored sometimes since I can’t bring him out to the playground so I get Darling to bring Ethan to join our foodie friends in their food quest.

Last week, the foodie friends dined in Private Kitchen Uptown Damansara to try the famous Hong Kong Mei-Xin Mooncakes. For the first time, Mei-Xin Mooncakes from Hong Kong (known as Maxim’s at Hong Kong) join the competitive battle of mooncake market in Malaysia with their 100% made in Hong Kong exquisite mooncakes which include traditional baked series and signature snowy series.

We’ve tried a lot of local mooncakes around town so it’s nice to try something from Hong Kong for a change. Of course they can’t be eating only mooncakes for dinner so here’s what they had for dinner:

special long boiled soup of the day

It was a cold evening and there’s nothing better to start their dinner with this hot bowl of nutritious soup.

Braised Chicken in Hua Diao Wine

Crispy fried tofu with salt and pepper

Crispy on the outside; soft on the inside, they can’t have enough of this. Darling promised to bring me here once my confinement is over just to try this dish.

braised tomato and eggplant

He also wants me to try this braised tomato and eggplant. He said I must try this delicious soft eggplant that is generously coated in tomato sauce.

stir-fried pork neck meat in xo sauce

Pork Neck is not really something that can tickle Darling and Ethan’s fancy but the XO sauce used to cook this dish is so nice that Darling decided to bring home a bottle for me to try whipping out my own version at home.

stir-fried prime beef with kiwi and wasabi

Darling doesn’t take beef so this is one dish that he did not sample.

chinese cabbage with dried shrimp & vermicelli in supreme soup

The supreme soup is almost similar to those used in Fish Head Meehoon and this is just nice to end a satisfying dinner.

After a scrumptious dinner it is finally mooncake time. Ethan’s favourite! He loves mooncakes so much he can go to the moon and back for them! :P

Since I am still in confinement and can’t join them for dinner and mooncakes, they brought home some mooncakes for me to try.

Hong Kong Mei-Xin's Mooncake

Hong Kong Mei Xin Mooncakes – Mei-Xin Snowy Mango with Pomelo Dessert, Mei-Xin Snowy Sesame with Macadamia Nuts and Mei-Xin White Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake with Egg Yolk.

Lotus paste with yolk

The white lotus seed paste is smooth with a delicate fragrance and not overly sweet.

Mango

The snowy mooncakes from Mei-Xin is unlike the ones we get locally. Mei-Xin’s version  is chewy and if you love mochi you’ll love this. Based on consumer research findings last year, Mei-Xin’s Snowy Series was voted as “Most Chewy Crust” and “Overall Most Tasty Snowy Mooncake” in Hong Kong.

Black sesame mooncake

Mei-Xin Sesame with Macadamia Nuts

Being in confinement and having this sesame with Macadamia Nuts is just heavenly. The fragrant sesame paste simply swept me off my feet even Darling is loving it!

Mei-Xin Mooncakes are now available at Private Kitchen, AEON and Jaya Grocer.

Yummy food! But the last time I went to Private Kitchen at Uptown, the quality not so good anymore. Or maybe the chef was out of town LOL! So the HK mooncakes are nicer than Malaysian moon cakes?
