Learning the art of painting

The kindergarten that Ethan is attending is kinda ‘weird’ in a sense that though they have Art & Craft in their timetable, they don’t do much BUT they’d encourage us to sign Ethan up for the additional Art & Craft classes held every Thursday AFTER schooling hours with an additional fee. Some of his friends go for this and Ethan’s teacher is always commenting that though Ethan is doing great in every subject, he is not too creative when it comes to artwork hence he should sign up for this class. Even during the recent Parents Teacher Meet, I was told the same thing that Ethan lacks imagination and his artwork is not up to par with the rest. Ethan heard his teacher’s remark and got a bit discouraged from that day onwards. He kept on pestering me to sign him up for Art class saying he doesn’t want to be left behind :(

I do not want to enroll Ethan for this additional Art & Craft classes. Firstly is because it will take up more of his time. As it is, since he started kindy, we are already lacking of time unlike last time when I home-schooled him. Secondly, it is costly. Thirdly, I’m good in crafting though not very good in art BUT I believe I can still guide Ethan in that area.

A couple of days ago, we had some spare time. I decided to do some drawing and painting with Ethan. His current craze is dinosaurs, planets and space and Transformers. Of course I wont want to be drawing Transformers so we did some dinosaur painting.

I got him to draw a stegosaurus and this is what it looks like:

I find it rather cute! Haha!

Then I let him paint it. That boy wants everything to be CLEAN and NEAT but I told him that painting looks best if we play about with the colours and mix them as much as possible without messing it up. He then added streaks of yellow to the brown soil.

He painted the sky next.

And took quite some time to paint the stegosaurus as I guided him on simple shading.

The end result – A tortoise-like Stegosaurus! LoL!

I think it’s OKAY-la considering this is his first attempt :P He was extremely excited and gained back his confidence. He told me that he won’t fare too badly next time in his art work.

He waited for the Daddy to come home and anxiously showed his dinosaur to the Dad only for the Dad to say that the dinosaur looked ‘tired and not very nice’. Aiyo! I wanted to smack the Daddy right there and then but refrained! >_<

Ethan sulked after that but the Daddy laughed at him saying that ‘you need to learn to accept criticism for your work’. Ethan took it positively and told the Daddy that his next artwork will be better! That’s MY boy! :)

Chesh!!! They just want business obviously. That is good, very creative…good colouring too and anyway, not everyone is artistically inclined e.g. where music and singing is concerned. All may be gifted in their own ways. Up to one to discover where one’s talents lie and develop those – can’t force anyone into anything.

He lacks imagination?.huh..he always do crafting with you wor. I’m sure with your guidance, Ethan will excel in arts. Gwen is imaginative but not creative. She is asking me to enrol her into arts class but I don’t have time to chauffeur her to extra classes la.
