Hands on learning experience

Mid Autumn Festival is just around the corner but I have yet to buy any mooncakes. This year, the number of people making their own mooncakes shoot sky high due to the exorbitant prices of commercial mooncakes. Ethan got the chance to try making mooncakes when we were invited to sample Resort World Genting’s mooncakes collection. Read all about it here.

I’ve tried shaping mooncake too last year in West Lake Garden, Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa.

Since Ethan and I have both tried making mooncakes before, why not try making our own mooncakes right? The problem is, I don’t have the confidence in making everything from scratch. When we made mooncakes with the Sifus, all the ingredients were readily prepared for us. I doubt I can prepare my own ingredients hence the failure to start making mooncakes at home.

But yesterday, Ethan came home from his Mandarin class EXTREMELY HAPPY! He was grinning from ear to ear with his hands hidden at the back of him. Once he entered the house he presented me two mooncakes. He said he made them with his teachers. Aww…

Mickey Mouse Pin Pei mooncake.

I almost laugh when I see the Mickey Mouse is a bit out of shape but refrained because I saw this twinkle in Ethan’s eyes as he presented the mooncake to me. I can see that he is very proud of his creation.

He then gave me another mooncake, a flower mooncake. This looks much better :D

We shared the mooncake, Ethan and I. The Daddy only gets to eat ONE small bite. Hehe..

This is what I like about BaoBei. They never fail to have some hands-on activities with the children come any festivities. I remembered last year during Tang Yuen festival, the teachers taught the kids to roll their own tangyuen balls. Ethan managed to roll only TWO. The rest of it went flat or out of shape. After rolling their tangyuen, the teacher helped them to boil it and served it for them to eat. One tangyuen fell onto the floor when Ethan was about to eat it and he almost cried! I dunno how the teacher pacified him later but he was still very sad when he told me the story of the dropped tangyuen.

This time, he did not drop his mooncakes and he was glowing as he took bites after bites of that delicious mooncake.

This are the things that kids will miss out if they do not go to school and because of this, I really have to start sourcing for a kindergarten for Ethan. He’s going to be six next year and have never been to kindi. He’s missing out a lot.. Poor boy.

You are still homeschooling him right? In terms of socializing, I think he is doing great as he has a blogger mummy. Not to worry that he is missing out. I think he is smart enough to catch up fast!
