What would you do if you were in my position?

The house behind us has been vacant from the moment we took possession of our house keys and shifted in. It has NEVER been occupied. I think we got this house in 2004, I dunno. It has got to be BEFORE 2005 as that is the year we got married, I think! I’m never good in dates anyway…

Anyway, the past week, someone started to do some renovation works on that house. Finally somebody will be moving in I thought..

One fine morning, I went to the toilet downstairs only to find a couple of droppings that looked like they belong to the Mickey Mouse clan. I did not think too much about it and just sprayed it down the toilet bowl. That same night, I went to the kitchen to wash my mug as I was about to go to bed at 1am when something JUMPED out of the garbage bin. I saw a RAT! Damn!

I screamed like I’ve just seen a RAT! o.O

Darling came running into the kitchen. He of all person is the BRAVEST man I can rely on when it comes to pests. Remember how I had to dispose a dead rat in front of my house back in 2009? If you don’t, read about it here.

Anyway, thank goodness Ethan was fast asleep upstairs. Darling took a long stick and I helped to clear the kitchen so that it would be easier to hit the rat! Gasp! While we were looking for the rat, we wondered how on Earth did it gets into our house. I went to close the toilet door as I did not want the rat to run inside when I saw this:

The lid was open. I never leave the lid open as I’m very afraid of centipedes and more. I queried Darling and he said he did not lift it open. I wondered if the rat could have gotten into our house through there. Is it possible that the rat lift it open like that? … but enough of thinking. We continued looking for the rat and finally it came running out.

We had no choice but to hit it with the stick and just as it fainted, I poured hot water on it :'( It died but now my entire kitchen smelt like RAT! I was so disgusted that I almost puke. I tell you, a scorched rat doesn’t smell delicious. It smells horrible!

Now the task here is to get rid of the dead rat. How do we do it?

One piece of advise – If you think wrapping your hands with plastic to grab the dead rat is a good idea, think again! Holding a dead rat with plastic wrapped hands feels exactly the same as holding the rat with bare hands!!!! I learnt it the hard way >_<

Darling suddenly became smarter and wrap THIS instead!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, to dispose a dead rat, wrap the above (instead of your hands) with plastic and scoop the rat. Carry it out of the house. Untie the plastic and remove with the rat in it. DISPOSE! As easy as A,B,C! Kao tim! Go to sleep…

The next morning while I was cooking, I heard a scratching sound in the toilet again. My heart skipped a beat as I was alone at home. Ethan was in school and Darling out at work. I went to have a look but saw nothing. I continued cooking and then I heard it again. Damn! My bulus all standing dy!

I squatted down and saw the white lid moving up and down! I can’t believe what I just saw! Just like in cartoons, the white lid goes up, down, up, down. The rat is trying hard to shove it open and this time it proves to be difficult coz I covered it with a floor tile making it heavier for them!

Can you see the lid almost opening? The rat is in action here but I can’t get a good shot as I was half panic as I was also thinking what IF it managed to push it open and jumps out of there right into my face?!

What did I do then? I took hot water and pour over it again! :'( The toilet smells of that stench again!

I now put TWO floor tiles on top in case they have a mighty HULK kinda rat among them. I’m so done with killing rats. I don’t want to kill another.

When they started the renovation, I assumed we’ll get new neighbours. We wondered who will be shifting in. Never once did it cross our mind that the rats decide to shift into OUR home instead! >_<

Darling got this and sprayed it all over the house. Of course we had to be extra careful with it with Ethan around. I made sure I mopped the entire place clean again and told Ethan not to play at the corners…

I dunno. You might think we are cruel to kill those rats but they are pests. What would you do if you were in my position?

    • //

Pls NO WAY am I going near a rat more to eat it!! yucks!

  • //

Oh my gosh…those rats are desperate to move into your house. Wah..I would panic and scream if I saw a rat. I don’t have the guts to pour hot water. Didn’t know you were so brave..haha. I think my Hubby would just set a mouse trap..don’t think he dares to hit the rat with a stick. Brilliant idea on wrapping the dust pan with a plastic bag.

    • //

We do have a mouse trap at home. Not working. Mouse this days are so smart!!

  • //

Hmm… I don’t like RAT wondering around my house too… Perhaps get a rat traps? Engage a pest control service company?

    • //

We needed to get rid of that mouse ASAP or we wont be able to sleep at night. i tried setting traps long time ago but it doesnt work :(

  • //

I keep a conventional rat cage, with baits to trap the rat. After capturing it, either sink the cage in a bucket of water or let it under the sun for several days. Drown or burn the rat…. sounds cruel :p

    • //

Eeee… let under the sun for several days lagi cruel! at least my rat died an instant death! haha… now i don’t feel as bad anymore! :P

  • //

First, I salute you and your darling. Hit the rat till faint, clap , clap, clap. Well done. Second, you are so smart to pour hot water inside the hole to kill another one. clap, clap, clap. Don’t worry, I am as cruel as you.

    • //

We don’t like to kill rats but they are just a nuisance and imagine the dirt they bring along. Not to mention diseases! I can’t let a rat into my life! :D

  • //

Yes…rats come up through that lid ! It happend in my parent’s house too….So mum usually used something heavy to cover the lid. Scary.

    I hate pests….will definitely KILL…..

    • //

Seriously right? I looked into that hole and I wonder how those rats can even climb up! Looks like so slippery… >_<

  • //

    nightmare for u..

  • //

I will scream and run away! LOL! so scary!!

  • //

The source is from the water outlet? if yes, just continue to cover it with the tile. They wont be able to come up. and I will drop the rat poison inside the water outlet . I guess the water outlet leads to sewage area or longkang? Get rat posion that is very “geng” type cos I heard before, some rats, once they took poison, they look for water… i think (Reana’s post..)

    • //

Yeah, william poured some poison in the too .. I dunno where that will lead too but…

  • //

I will definitely kill it too. There’s no place in my home for pests. So far I’ve not encountered rats in my home before cos we stay in a highrise… only got ants, cockroaches and once in a while, a stray cicak, which will eventually die cos I got cicak phobia hehe (force the hubs to do the killing la).

    • //

I’ll get William to kill cicaks too but he said their eyes are too cute for him to kill them. He cant do it!! -.-

  • //

    Put a mouse trap!

    • //

And what do we do with the
Mouse in the trap? Lagi scared…

  • //

omg!!!! I would gross out too……….. I’ll definitely let hubs deal with it… can imagine the smell lah, wanna puke, blek!

  • //

I had the same experience….the rat actually got into the store room and shit n pee! Horror..the smell inside the room was horrible.

  • //

I will not pour hot water on the rat…too geli and cruel lar. I’ll probably ask hubby to put it in a bag and drive very very far to release mickey mouse in a bush….Rats and Bats are my most geli animals….

  • //

Rat……oh no, I hate it…..get a trap to standby in case it run to your house again.

  • //

Eeww.. I’m more afraid of cockcroaches compared to rats.. But of course I won’t feel comfortable if I know rats are in the house…

  • //

Maybe you should contact Rentokil and see what they can do about it. When I first shifted into my current home, we had cockcroaches infestation. If you walked into the kitchen at 3am in the morning, you would see easily see 30 roaches having a party. We contracted Rentokil for a year and they helped us to get rid of them….so far so good …

    • //

Yucks! 30 roaches having a party is so gross! The rats are gone by now after we poured that rat poison down the hole…

  • //

I used to be a cockroach killer and now… you become the rat killer … wahahahahaha… cheers!! xD
