Growing Up Milk Powder

*Sticky post 48 hours*

With a blink of an eye we are at the beginning of 2012. Looking back, what have been achieved throughout last year?

Career wise, I went from occasionally working to totally not working -.- Thank goodness for blogging, I still have a little income to spare. Health wise is not looking too great. I’ve been slacking on my evening walks and just recently Ethan commented that I am fat! Went to the scale and yes, I’ve put on 2kg! :’(

As usual, every year end or beginning of the year, we will go for our routine health check ie blood test and more. This time, I included pap smear together. You know when you are bored of waiting, you tend to read every single thing you see? Only then do those little ABCs on the wall look so interesting and you tend to look at every crook and corners for cobwebs? I also saw this video being played on tv.

I did not notice what it was all about the first time I watch it as my eyes were basically fixed there to kill boredom. The second time I watched it only did it occur to me that it is Q&A video with Prof Davies and Dr Monro. They are actually talking about added sugars in children’s milk and sugar intake recommendations. It is said that for a 2 to 3 year old only 150 kcal or less than 7 teaspoons per day maximum is recommended.

No wonder they said for an Ad to be effective, it has to be shown 3 times within a short time frame. The first time is to tease you, the second time to grab your attention and the third time to convey the message across.

It hit me there and then. Back in March I was so gung-ho trying to cut down on Ethan’s added sugars intake. I was so determined to calculate his daily added sugars consumption. I was horrified when I found out he is taking 13 teaspoons of added sugars in his growing up milk every day. I made it a point to read the labels on his drink/food for Sucrose, Glucose Syrup Solid and Corn Syrup Solid are all added sugars.

Then I found out that his current milk now has NO ADDED SUCROSE so I start to relax a bit but now I learnt that it could still contain other types of added sugar! Tension lah me because though Ethan is supposed to be on solid food now, he still takes growing up milk at least 3 times a day! -.-

I read the ingredients again and googled the following only to find out that these are sugars as well…

Glucose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide)

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) also sometimes called oligofructose or oligofructan, are oligosaccharide fructans, used as an alternative sweetener.

Polyfructose : Synonym for fructosan … A polysaccharide of fructose (e.g., inulin) containing small amounts of other sugars.

I knew it! It couldn’t be THAT easy to just cut away sugars from growing up milk. They may claim NO SUCROSE formula but there are still added sugars in it. This is becoming a game of going around the bush…

Am I the only one concerned about added sugars in growing up milk or you too have the same headache? What did you do about it? Please share..

My two girls didn’t take growing up milk, except fresh milk and yogurt. No matter how much they eat also, they are still very skinny, due to not much added sugar in their diet.

well, I feel that sugar should be no problem for kids as long as parents know how to control the sweetness.

  • //

Those western country produce formula and sell to us here, whereby their children take fresh milk instead of formula. See the difference hahaha. Maybe I can charge all my kids formula to those susu lembu in plastic packet, boil it and NO SUGAR added. I think Asian people have sweet tooth, even add sugar into those boil fresh milk….

used to drink milk.. but no experience in milking kids :P

no comment about that, but i think it shouldnt be a problem to kids?
provided not excessive sugar level la. otherwise they will be sugar rush and hyperactive whole day! =p

every formula milk do had added sugar into it.. but still, just control the quantity then.. But who cares, sweet for the win!! Ha ha ha..

I’m not beating myself about it because my children are still young. Skinny lagi as long as I don’t spoil them with too many sweet stuff in a day. Drink milk 3 times a day is fine with me. My children also drink that amount of times a day. I don’t mind that because they can get picky with food so at least they can get all the vitamins from their milk.

lucky me no drink milk! :p

Pap smear? You did not go for pregnancy test kah? LOL!!!

Anmum Essential has no sugar at all. The key to identify formula milk with added sugars if the total carbs per serving exceeds 13-15g. Most of the commercial formula out there contain more than 20g carbs per serving! Btw don’t get confused with fructooligosaccharide, as it is more of a prebiotic than an artificial sweetener. Prebiotics in the form of inulin and oligo are beneficial for kids’ intestinal flora balance.
