BREAST Self Examination (BSE) Guide & Wacoal Fashion Showcase
Still on Wacoal’s Let’s Pink Event @ 1Utama last Saturday, 2 October 2011 for the launching of its 2011 Pink Ribbon Campaign to promote breast cancer awareness.
Breast cancer is the most occurring cancer in women followed by colon cancer and then cervical cancer.
We were taught the correct way to perform breast self-examination.
You’ll need a mirror big enough to see both breasts and a pillow. Breast self-examination should be done once a month on a regular date preferably few days after your period ends. If you are already having menopause, pick any particular date of the month to do the exam and repeat your BSE every following month on that same date.
Now, let’s take a look at the guide.
Always start with looking for changes in front of the mirror. Only we know our breasts best so we should do this ourselves.
* First with hands on your sides, look at both breast and check the appearance of your breast. See if your breasts move in the same way.
* Next with arms raised above your head check the appearance again for any changes in the skin colour or texture.
* Finally with hands pressed firmly on hips and chest muscles contracted, look at the nipples and areolas for any abnormalities.
With your left arms over your head, use your right-hand fingers to apply gentle pressure to the left breast. Stroke in a circular motion, making sure to cover the entire breast area. Take note of
* change in size or shape of your breast
* dimpling of the skin
* change in the nipples and areolas for dimples, bumps, or retraction (indentation)
* persistent pain or tenderness
Switch sides and repeat. This is best done in the shower, as wet skin will have the least resistance to the friction of your fingers.
Again I repeat, only WE know our breast best so it is highly advisable to do this ourselves as IF you get your partner to help you with this in the shower, you might not be able to complete the examination before something else takes over :P
This is best done in the bedroom as we need to lie down.
* Put a pillow under your right shoulder
* Place your right hand under your head
* Use your left hand to examine your right breast
* Use the flat part of your three fingers, not the finger tips to examine
* Take note of any changes in texture, color, or size. Switch sides and repeat
As breast tissue extends from under your nipple and areolaup toward your armpit, you’ll need to check your armpits too.
First feel the armpit. Then start on the outer edge of your breast and feel round the whole breast in smaller and smaller circles. Finally feel behind the nipples itself.
Take note of:
* any presence of lumps in the breast or armpits
* thickening areas in the breast
* skin colour changes
You’ll also need to check your nipples for bleeding or discharge. With the index and middle fingers of your right hand, gently squeeze the left nipple and pull forward. The nipple should spring back into place and not pulled back into the breast. Check for any leaking fluids. Repeat on the other nipple.
9 out of 10 lumps are not cancerous so fret not if you found a lump. Get dressed and see your doctor for further examination.
Love our breasts. Now let’s chill and take a look at the Let’s Pink Catwalk during the launch..
