Toe caught in the escalator @ 1 Utama – 19/6/2010

1 Utama, New Wing Centre Court (19/6/2010) At approximately 3.40pm we heard a kid wailing from the escalator. I dashed to the 1st level of the escalator to see what was going on. The scene I saw was a very devastating one.
A boy’s toe was caught in the descending escalator. They had just stopped the escalator when I arrived. The father was hugging him tight trying to pacify the boy but we could see that he was in tremendous pain.
I looked around and I saw people watching with hands clasped to their hearts. It hurts so much just to watch; helplessly feeling sorry for the boy.

The father stared helplessly into my eyes as he nodded when he saw me with my camera.  I wished I could do something to make the boy feel better but NO one could make him better then.  With his permission, I quickly recorded the scene but had to stop as I just could not bear to watch it further. It hurts too much. I do not know to what extend the boy’s injuries are but I sure hope that both father and son are in good hands now :(
The video of the boy’s toe caught in the escalator
The security team doing their best to free the boy. Definitely need to call formedical alert :(

  • //

Btw, was the boy wearing slippers or shoes? I heard that it was risky wearing slippers when on the escalator.

  • //

OMG! Hope he is not getting any serios injury. Is he wearing Crocs? I have restrict my kids to wear Crocs to shopping mall. If they are, i will be very panic when they go up and down the escalators, keep asking them to be careful. If this boy is not wearing Crocs, then i need to be more careful some more……….

Today.. at this time i was still in IKEA/Ikano… On Thursday while in 1Utama, my son and i also saw one similiar incident, the girls shoe lace was stuck in the escalator while descending and she stumbled and fell during the last few steps.. thank God the shoe lace broke her free.. Gosh, it was frightening too..how come these 2 incidents happened in 1UTAMA?

  • //

Oh no!! Every parent's worst fear… Imagine the pain the kid has to go thru. I think it would have been unbearable even for an adult man. Hope that he is alright. :(

Poor boy, my girl was wearing crocs shoes sometime back and her shoe was caught in the escalator too. I was so shocked. Luckily it was a minor injury… so now, no more crocs shoes…

  • //

Oh dear …. I hope he is OK ….. how could this happened?? Is he wearing crocs?

  • //

I read a report of something like this in the newspapers not too long ago – also over your side in West Malaysia, can't remember exactly where now. What is going on? Something wrong with certain brand of escalators? Or are children too ill-disciplined these days? So bad that they get themselves into this kind of situation? I wouldn't be surprised…all the spoilt brats I see these days. Doesn't know how to behave properly at all…and never listen to the parents!

  • //

i don't want to imagine…. hopefully the stuck toes could be saved….. very painful experience. My girls always wear socks and shoes for outing. And If I spotted her doing some dangerous act at the escalator. She will immediately get a very painful lesson from me, and a never ending speech.

  • //

Oh no, this is so scary! Every time when i bring my boys to shopping mall, i make sure they stand properly and no "monkey" on the escalator. I just show them this picture to "threaten" them, telling them this is what going to happen if they don't listen to me.Poor boy, hope he is ok and nothing serious. :(

  • //

omigod..so heart-wrenching. i hope the boy is ok. very traumatic for him.

STP – The most recent that happened and was reported in the news was the one in CentrePoint, Bandar Utama. That was BAD! And I happened to be there too.. shiats! :(

  • //

Aiyo, poor boy. Escalators are dangerous..little toes can be caught between the gap.

  • //

That's a real traumatic experience for the kid and his dad. Not only little toes but dresses could get caught on the moving steps. We could also trip and fall. Be cautious when you're on the escalator. This is one of the few times where you have to look DOWN.

  • //

Oh, my! Felt painful too even when reading this post! Yes, this reminds us as parents not to take the escalator for granted especially when we are with the kids.

  • //

  • //

    oh gosh!!!!!!!!!!!

  • //

You caught Action Movie, should send to American Funniest Video, though not so funny to the boy.I am very scared of escalators. I grew up in Sibu, the first one the install, I was in form 6. They say the escalator got ghost, because it was bought second hand from a building that caught fire and killed people.Any way, they did not say, don't wear open toes shoes. My toe was bitten by the escalator. Even now so many years past, I am still scared. LOL actually not LOl

  • //

    aiyoooooo… http://www.keeyit.com

  • //

ouch…my boy's leg was once stuck before, but we were quick enough to pull his feet out and that also he suffered superficial cuts. Now each time they go on escalators, my eyes are aimed right at their feet.
